According to the Da Nang police, at around 8 pm on August 2, Ms. Tran Thi H.M. (32), residing in Binh Hien ward, Hai Chau district, Da Nang city, reported to the authorities that her house had been broken into and 7 taels of SJC gold, 5 daces of gold jewelry, and 7 daces of 9999 gold were stolen. The total value of the loss is approximately VND 640 million.
After receiving the report, the leader of the Criminal Police Department determined that this was an especially serious case with significant property damage. The perpetrator used sophisticated tactics, such as moving to avoid surveillance cameras, changing clothes, and using different vehicles during the crime and escape.
Therefore, the unit’s leader instructed the detectives to gather information in the area over the past two months to find similar theft cases in terms of time and method to track down the culprit.
After breaking into a house and stealing more than 8 taels of gold (worth approximately VND 640 million), the “super thief” used various tricks to evade the police investigation. However, 12 days later, the Criminal Police Department of Da Nang City, in coordination with other forces, successfully arrested the perpetrator.
In coordination with the Hai Chau District Police, Thac Gian Ward Police, and Thanh Khe District Police, on August 10, through screening and professional measures, the Criminal Police Department identified Phan Van Thuong (43), residing in Thac Gian ward, Thanh Khe district, as a suspicious individual and placed him under surveillance.
Initial information revealed that Thuong had two prior convictions for theft, a gambling addiction, no stable job, and was often spotted in alleys and dead-end streets in the city center during peak hours without any apparent reason. Based on this information, the detectives determined that on August 1, Phan Van Thuong was present in an alley on Nguyen Hoang Street multiple times…
After identifying these suspicious activities, on August 13, the Criminal Police Department summoned Thuong for interrogation. At the police station, Phan Van Thuong initially admitted to the crime and confessed that after stealing the valuables, he sold 1.65 taels of SJC gold to two gold shops on Tran Cao Van Street in Da Nang and 3 taels of SJC gold to three gold shops in Hue City, Thua Thien-Hue Province (the exact locations are yet to be determined). He used the money to gamble online and for personal expenses.
Based on Thuong’s confession, the Criminal Police Department searched his residence and retrieved the stolen items, including 1.2 taels of SJC gold, 9 gold bracelets, 2 gold rings, 1 gold necklace, VND 8 million in cash, a set of clothes, a helmet, and other documents related to his theft activities.
The investigation is still ongoing to clarify the case further.
