The Semiconductor Alliance, initiated by Hanoi National University, aims to foster high-quality training, research, and workforce development for the semiconductor industry. Aligned with Resolution 57 of the Politburo on advancing science, technology, innovation, and Decision 1017 of the Prime Minister on the “Semiconductor Workforce Development Program by 2030, Vision to 2050,” the alliance seeks to drive progress in this critical sector.

In its first phase, the alliance brings together over 20 domestic and international entities, including leading Vietnamese universities such as Hanoi National University, Ho Chi Minh City National University, FPT University, and the Institute of Cryptography; prestigious international institutions like Sungkyunkwan University (South Korea), Kumamoto University (Japan), and HSE University (Russia); and major semiconductor companies such as Viettel, FPT, Nisso, and MRIV International. This diverse participation underscores the significant expectations for Vietnam’s semiconductor industry in the coming decade.

Under the collaboration framework, members will connect educational institutions, research institutes, and businesses both domestically and internationally, share laboratory facilities, support faculty training, promote technology transfer and commercialization of research products, and advise the government on developing a robust semiconductor ecosystem.

Mr. Nguyen Vinh Quang, Director of FPT Semiconductor, FPT Corporation, discusses semiconductor training and research in Vietnam.

Speaking at the event, Mr. Nguyen Vinh Quang, Director of FPT Semiconductor, highlighted two significant gaps hindering Vietnam’s semiconductor industry growth. The first is the fragmented collaboration between universities and businesses, while the second is the lack of cohesion among domestic companies, each pursuing independent paths without a unified ecosystem. He emphasized that the alliance is essential for fostering meaningful connections and seizing collective opportunities.

Mr. Quang expressed confidence that with government support and collaborative efforts among businesses and educational institutions through the Semiconductor Alliance, Vietnam is well-positioned to master critical stages of the semiconductor value chain and emerge as a strategic global hub in the near future.

Launch of the Vietnam Semiconductor Alliance

FPT representatives reaffirmed their long-term commitment to partnering with universities and research institutes in semiconductor workforce training and technology development. FPT, the Institute of Semiconductors and Advanced Materials (Hanoi National University), and E3 Lab (University of Engineering and Technology, Hanoi National University) are establishing an Innovation Center to develop training programs and provide practical industry experience for students and young engineers. Additionally, FPT launched the Vietnam Semiconductor Incubation and Development Center (V.S.I.C) in collaboration with the National Innovation Center and partners to cultivate high-quality talent and foster entrepreneurship in the semiconductor sector.

FPT has also built a comprehensive training ecosystem, offering undergraduate programs in IC design at FPT University, vocational programs at FPT Polytechnic, and international BTEC partnerships. FPT has expanded collaborations with leading Asian technical universities, such as Asia University (Taiwan) and Gachon University (South Korea), implementing a “2+2” model allowing students to study two years in Vietnam and two years abroad, earning globally recognized semiconductor engineering degrees. These initiatives underpin FPT’s goal of training 10,000 semiconductor engineers by 2030, contributing to Vietnam’s target of 50,000 engineers.

FPT’s journey in the semiconductor industry began over a decade ago with the vision of creating a “Vietnamese chip.” A pivotal moment came in 2022 with the establishment of FPT Semiconductor. In just three years, FPT Semiconductor has successfully developed PMIC and Power IC chips, entirely designed by Vietnamese engineers, and exported to demanding markets like Japan and South Korea.

Looking ahead, FPT aims to develop MCU, AI-on-Edge SoC, IoT, and Automotive chips, gradually building a “Made in Vietnam” semiconductor product ecosystem. Alongside IC design, FPT is deepening its involvement in high-value supply chain stages, such as chip packaging and testing.
