The “Buy Bitcoin” sign held behind Janet Yellen at a 2017 congressional hearing has sold for $1 million at auction. The iconic sign sold for 16.051 BTC, equivalent to just over $1 million.

Scarce.City , the auction house that facilitated the sale, said it set a new record for the platform. The auction was held at PubKey, a Bitcoin-themed bar in New York City. According to Pubkey, the “Buy Bitcoin” man, who goes by Justin but is known online as Squirrekkywrath, is now the proud owner of the sign.

Proceeds from the sale will go to fund a Layer 2 Bitcoin startup called Tirrel Corp. The startup is owned by Christian Langalis, who originally held the sign in the now-famous photo.

After raising the sign at the House Financial Services hearing, Langalis was escorted out of the building for violating the committee’s decorum rules. However, he got his point across as the image went viral and hype around Bitcoin continued to grow.
