The 500kV Circuit 3 power line spans nearly 100km across Nghe An province, with 202 electricity poles located on various terrains, from hilly to rural areas, in six districts and towns.

In recent days, the electricity poles have been taking shape. At each pole, there are between 20 and 30 busy workers constructing and installing them.

Pole 370, located in the pine forest of Nghi Van commune, Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province, stands at a height of over 70 meters and weighs about 180 tons. It took more than ten workers from Song Da 11 Company nearly half a month of hard work to construct this pole. In addition to the construction team, over ten officers and workers from Hoa Binh Power Company were also mobilized to provide support in setting up the pole.

Each electricity pole will be designed with temporary stairs and an outer protective circle for workers to climb up and down. “In the early morning, the construction workers climb up the pole to receive the structural components and assemble them into frames. When the weather is cool, they can work for the whole morning, but under the scorching heat, they can only stand being up there for an hour or two before needing to come down to rest,” shared Mr. Tran Huu Tuan (49 years old), team leader of the construction team from Song Da 11 Company.

On the ground, officers and workers from the power companies assist in assembling the components and then use a hoist to transport them up for the workers to install.

At some poles with favorable locations, large cranes can be used to transport components to high altitudes to facilitate installation.

However, in many areas where large cranes cannot access, the officers and workers have to manually carry the materials, enduring great hardship.

“Despite having worked in this industry for many years, this is the first time I’ve worked on such a large power pole. The heat is intense, and the work is challenging, but we always try our best to complete the task as soon as possible,” shared Mr. Luu Ngo Thuy.

In recent days, the weather in Nghe An has been extremely hot, with temperatures reaching up to 40 degrees Celsius. At times, the strong wind blows, forcing the workers to cover their faces and limbs. “To protect their faces from the heat, the workers use wet towels under their hats to keep their heads and faces cool. But the towels soon dry out in the wind. The heat is unbearable,” shared Mr. Nguyen Van Tuan, who is working on the pole in Nghi Van commune, Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province.

Due to the intense heat, the workers have to take frequent breaks to rest and rehydrate before continuing their work.

Pole 356, located in the middle of a field in Nghi Kieu commune, Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province, allows for the use of a large-capacity crane to support the installation. However, due to the large volume of work, it takes about ten days to complete the installation of this pole.

“The large crane only supports the lifting of materials and assembly up to the first crossarm of the pole. From there to the top, we have to use a hoist to lift the components and rely on manual labor. Cool weather makes it a bit easier, but working under the scorching heat is extremely challenging,” shared Mr. Dang Dinh Toan (54 years old), team leader of the construction team at pole 356 in Nghi Kieu commune, Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province.

“The pole is over 70 meters high, and you can’t see the top from the ground. These past few days have been extremely hot, and while I work on the ground, my colleagues working at such heights face even greater challenges,” shared Mr. Quach Dinh Duong, head of the Hoa Binh Power Company’s support team, as he stood at the foot of the pole, holding a rope to secure the materials for the workers above to assemble.

It is known that for the 500kV Circuit 3 project, the Northern, Central, and Southern Power Corporations, as well as the Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporations, have mobilized 119 teams (each team consisting of 12-15 people) with more than 1,500 engineers and workers to participate in the construction and installation of poles and wires for the 500kV Circuit 3 project. According to the plan, the construction of the 500kV power line section from Quang Trach (Quang Binh) to Pho Noi (Hung Yen) will be completed before June 30.

Nghe An Provincial Youth Union has formed 74 volunteer teams with more than 1,100 young union members participating in the 30-day peak performance campaign, “30 days and nights of volunteering, overcoming the sun and rain to support the construction of the 500 kV Circuit 3 power line in Nghe An province.”
