The Hi Green Community Transforms a Concrete Embankment into an Eco-Park

In mid-June, the Hi Green Cua Dai Marine Eco-Park in Hoi An was handed over to the local community. The eco-park is part of the Military Commercial Joint Stock Bank's (MB) social responsibility campaign, aiming to create a sustainable and vibrant space for locals and visitors alike.

The park is not just a playground for the community, but also supports the conservation of landscapes and native ecosystems, utilizing the countervailing budget from the MB Mastercard Hi Green card transactions and the Hi Green – Binh Minh Xanh run.

The park has a total area of approximately 13,000 square meters and is part of the Green Corridor Cua Dai planning project by the Institute of Construction Economics (ICUE) in coordination with MB Bank and Think Playgrounds social enterprise (TPG). The project aims to regenerate and conserve the local ecosystem while raising community awareness about preserving natural landscapes and wildlife.

Inspired by the birds of Cua Dai sand dunes, the park’s design features images of the Bar-tailed Godwit and Sumatran Goose. Community facilities such as a multi-purpose playground, picnic tables, bike parking, and wheelchair-accessible sidewalks are also included to improve the quality of life for residents, especially the elderly and children. Additionally, the park is equipped with educational information boards covering native ecosystems, the meaning, and goals of the park’s construction project to provide a knowledge base for visitors and spread the message of sustainable development.

The park’s inauguration was held in conjunction with the opening ceremony of the summer camp and the launch of the Month of Action for Children in 2024, organized by the city of Hoi An. In addition to camping and kite-flying activities, children also participated in a painting contest on wild birds in the Cua Dai area with the theme “Hoi An Youth Doing a Thousand Good Deeds – Protecting the Environment” and “Protecting Wild Birds in the Coastal Area of Hoi An.”

Mr. Tran Ngoc Thanh, Vice Chairman of the Cua Dai Ward People’s Committee, shared: “In addition to greening the Cua Dai coastline, the project also serves the tourism development of Hoi An city according to Resolution 31 of Quang Nam province on building Hoi An into an eco-cultural-tourism city.”

According to recorded data from 2016 to 2022, the Cua Dai coast lost 112 hectares of land due to erosion (as reported by the Meteorology and Hydrology Magazine on April 25, 2022). Therefore, the Cua Dai Eco-Park is part of Hoi An city’s efforts to revive the Cua Dai beach and raise community awareness about sustainable development. Eighty percent of the park’s renovation budget is funded by MB through the Hi Green – Binh Minh Xanh running challenge and the MB Mastercard Hi Green card.

MB Mastercard Hi Green is a green banking card launched by MB in collaboration with Mastercard. The card body is made entirely from recycled materials, and cardholders can access a series of benefits of up to 50% at MB’s green partner network, including Xanh SM, Coolmate, and Cocoon. For every transaction made with the Hi Green card, MB will match 1% of the transaction value and contribute it to environmental and social projects (ESG). From May 30 to June 30, 2024, to celebrate World Environment Day (June 5), MB increased the matching rate from 1% to 5%, encouraging the community to live and consume more sustainably.

Earlier, in January 2024, MB used the countervailing budget from the Hi Green campaign to build the first eco-park in Phuc Tan, Hanoi. Revitalized from a garbage-filled site, the Phuc Tan Forest Park brought a new look to the area, providing a public space for residents and helping to protect the ecological environment. The project also rehabilitated polluted land and prevented soil erosion.

In 2024, MB aims to build 10 playgrounds and eco-parks nationwide. Three more projects are expected to be completed in Son Tra (Da Nang), Binh Tan (Ho Chi Minh City), and Dong Anh (Hanoi) in June and July.
