Samsung Electronics’ chairman appears to agree with online criticisms mocking the company’s products as “Apple clones.”
According to a new report from South Korean news agency Ajunews, Chairman Lee Jae-yong is dissatisfied with Samsung’s mobile division, Samsung MX (Mobile eXperience), due to online reactions and technology news sites’ responses regarding the design of the company’s newest products. The Samsung chairman is said to have instructed the division to “reconsider their plans” after criticisms that the latest devices’ designs resembled Apple clones.
“Chairman Lee himself stepped in following the controversy over design and quality copying Apple’s regarding the Buds 3 and Galaxy Watch 7, released last month,” an insider revealed to Ajunews. “The internal atmosphere is currently very bad.”
The article continues to state that unspecified actions have been taken against the head of Samsung MX as well as other employees in the company’s mobile division.
Apple Clone
Samsung faced a wave of criticism last month after its annual large-scale Galaxy Unpacked event. Alongside the latest smartphones, the consumer electronics giant also unveiled two new products: the Galaxy Watch Ultra smartwatch and the new Galaxy Buds 3 earbud line.
However, the Galaxy Unpacked event quickly turned negative online as smartphone reviewers, tech commentators, and even Samsung fans noticed the Apple-esque designs of both the smartwatch and earbuds.
“Today is a bad day for Samsung,” said Quinn Nelson of Snazzy Labs, a popular technology review channel on YouTube. “The Watch Ultra is the worst Apple clone in many centuries. It’s horrible.”
“It’s disheartening to see Samsung just put out a lineup of Apple clones,” said Andrew O’Hara of Apple Insider following the event. “It’s boring and a huge step back from Samsung’s previous stance.”
According to Ajunews’ report, these criticisms were even heard among journalists attending a press conference held at Samsung’s largest store in Seoul. According to the report, attending journalists “continuously talked about how Samsung’s new devices looked identical to Apple’s.”
Samsung’s latest reviews published recently often mentioned the “Apple-like design” issue.
“Samsung Made an Apple Watch Ultra Clone” was the title of a Bloomberg review.
The Verge published a Galaxy Watch Ultra review, expressing their “disappointment” at seeing Samsung copy Apple in this manner.
The next iterations of Samsung’s Galaxy Ultra smartwatch and wireless earbuds will likely look very different from the current Apple clones. But until then, Samsung endures accusations of copying one of its biggest competitors.
