This afternoon, the VKS [Vietnam Agency for Radiation and Nuclear Safety] proposed sentences for 254 defendants involved in irregularities at the Vietnam Registry.
Accordingly, the VKS representative requested that the court sentence defendant Tran Ky Hinh (former Director of the Vietnam Registry, from January 2014 to July 2021) to 18-19 years in prison for “Taking Bribes”, and 5-6 years for “Abusing Position and Power while performing official duties”. The total sentence for both crimes is 23-25 years in prison.

The defendant, Dang Viet Ha (former Director of the Vietnam Registry, from August 2021 to December 2022), was sentenced to 20 years in prison for “Taking Bribes”
The defendant, Nguyen Vu Hai (former Deputy Director of the Vietnam Registry) was sentenced to 4-5 years in prison for “Abusing Position and Power while performing official duties”; the defendant Tran Anh Quan (former Acting Head of Motor Vehicle Inspection Division) was sentenced to 17-18 years in prison for “Taking Bribes”

The defendant, Do Trung Hoc (former Head of Inland Waterways Vessel Department – currently at large) was sentenced to 20 years in prison for “Taking Bribes”
The defendant, Tran Lap Nghia (former Director of Registration Centers 62-03D – Long An; Center 71-02D – Ben Tre; Center 83-02D – Soc Trang) was sentenced to 12-13 years for “Taking Bribes”, 12-13 years for “Forgery in work”, and 4-5 years in prison for “Illegally accessing another person’s computer network, telecommunications network or electronic device”. The total sentence for all three crimes is 28-30 years in prison.
The remaining 248 defendants were given sentences ranging from 1-2 years in prison (but with a suspended sentence) to 20-22 years in prison.

Previously, presenting the case opinion, the VKS representative stated that this is a large-scale economic corruption case, causing particularly serious damage in the field of state management of motor vehicle inspection activities and inland waterway vehicles.
The VKS emphasized that defendants Tran Ky Hinh and Dang Viet Ha bear the highest responsibility for failing to perform their assigned duties and responsibilities, and for issuing directives that violate legal regulations, leading to irregularities and systemic negative behavior over a long period of time.
According to the VKS, Mr. Tran Ky Hinh is responsible for taking bribes and benefiting from 7.1 billion VND, while Mr. Dang Viet Ha is criminally responsible for taking bribes totaling 40 billion VND and benefiting from 8.5 billion VND.
