Vân Phong Economic Zone is located in Van Ninh district and Ninh Hoa town, Khanh Hoa province, about 30 km north of Nha Trang city. It is one of the three key economic regions of Khanh Hoa province. The zone covers an area of approximately 1,500 km2, nearly twice the size of Bac Ninh province (over 820 km2). The land area is 700 km2 and the water area is 800 km2.

The Vân Phong Economic Zone is divided into two areas: South Vân Phong and North Vân Phong. The South zone, located east of Ninh Hoa town, is planned as a transshipment container port, a comprehensive port, industrial complexes, and warehouses that take advantage of the deep-water port, as well as urban and tourism service areas.

The South Vân Phong area is home to several large factories, the most notable of which is the Vân Phong 1 BOT Thermal Power Plant, which began construction in 2019. The project has a total investment of nearly $2.6 billion, with 2 units and a total installed capacity of 1,432 MW. After more than 4 years of construction, the project was inaugurated in March 2024. The plant is expected to ensure electricity supply for Khanh Hoa province, the southern region, and the whole country.

The Vân Phong Foreign Trade Gasoline Warehouse has been in operation since June 2012, with a total investment of $125 million in the first phase and a total capacity of 505,000 cubic meters. If filled, the gasoline in the warehouse would be enough to fuel 50 million motorbikes for a month (assuming each bike uses 10 liters of gasoline).

The Hyundai – Vietnam Shipyard covers an area of 1 km2 of land and 1.7 km2 of sea. As of the end of 2023, the shipyard has built and delivered more than 166 ships, including cargo ships and oil tankers, to customers in Italy, Japan, South Korea, Greece, Denmark, and Singapore. The shipyard currently employs 5,000 workers and generates approximately VND 12,000 billion in revenue each year.

The Nam Vân Phong International Port is the largest port in the South Vân Phong area, capable of receiving vessels with a capacity of 50,000 – 70,000 tons. The port is expected to handle between one and two million tons of cargo per year.

The North Vân Phong area (Van Ninh district) is planned for high-end tourism development on Hon Lon Island and Hon Gom peninsula, as well as urban, tourism, green space, water, and hilly areas. There are several ongoing projects in this area, the most notable of which is the Bãi Cát Thắm tourism project, covering an area of 4.55 km2 with a total investment of nearly VND 25,300 billion.

Diep Son Island is located in Van Phong Bay, Khanh Hoa, about 60 km from Nha Trang city. It consists of three small islands: Hon Bip, Hon Giua, and Hon Duoc. The most striking feature of Diep Son is the nearly 1 km long sand road connecting the islands. Visitors can easily walk from one island to another and take advantage of the opportunity to capture vivid images against the backdrop of the vast blue sea. Photo: Crystal Bay.

The North Vân Phong area is planning an international transshipment port, an international cruise port, port logistics services, and industries in the Dam Mon area. The most prominent is the Bắc Vân Phong Comprehensive Port, which can accommodate vessels of up to 50,000 tons, in addition to several smaller ports.

In terms of transportation, the Vân Phong Economic Zone has received significant investment in highways, connecting roads, and airport planning. Specifically, the road project connecting National Highway 1A to Dam Mon, with a length of over 14 km, has been put into operation. The road is 34 meters wide with 6 lanes, and the total investment is nearly VND 1,000 billion. This project connects transportation from National Highway 1A to the center of the Hon Gom peninsula, facilitating infrastructure in the North Vân Phong area.

The Vân Phong – Nha Trang Expressway project has a total investment of VND 12,000 billion, a length of over 83 km, and is the second-longest among the 12 component projects for the 2021-2025 period. After more than a year of construction, the expressway has taken shape. Some sections have been asphalted, and median barriers and safety railings have been installed. On the construction site, contractors are working ahead of schedule, with basic completion expected by April 30, 2025, six months earlier than the other component projects.

Khanh Hoa province has also proposed investing in the Vân Phong Airport project, with a total investment of nearly VND 7,900 billion, a capacity of 1.5 million passengers per year, and a runway length of over 3 km. The airport will cover an area of about 5 km2. The photo shows the site where the Vân Phong Airport is expected to be built in Van Thang commune, Van Ninh district.

The Vân Phong Economic Zone is a multi-sectoral and multi-field comprehensive economic zone. It is expected to become an economic center that maximizes its untapped potential and strengths, while ensuring national defense and security, maintaining independence, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
