On August 14th, the Central Internal Affairs Committee held a press conference to announce the results of the 26th meeting of the Central Steering Committee for Corruption and Negative Behavior Prevention.

At the press conference, Major General Hoang Anh Tuyen, Deputy Chief of Office and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Public Security, provided an update on the investigation into the case related to Thuân An Joint Stock Company (Thuân An Group). So far, the Ministry’s Investigation Police Agency has prosecuted eight defendants.

“The Ministry’s Investigation Police Agency is continuing to investigate irregularities in the bidding process for Thuân An Group’s project implementation, while also focusing on expanding the investigation, recovering state assets, and ensuring a rigorous trial process. During the investigation, the defendants have admitted their wrongdoing and voluntarily returned or facilitated the return of 62 billion VND and 42,000 USD,” said Major General Tuyen.

According to Major General Tuyen, the Ministry’s Investigation Police Agency is reinforcing its efforts by further gathering evidence to expand the investigation and recover state assets.

Regarding Phuc Son Joint Stock Company (Phuc Son Group), the Ministry’s Investigation Police Agency has prosecuted and detained 23 defendants to investigate and clarify their wrongdoing. Thus far, the agency has seized a total of over 300 billion VND, nearly 2 million USD, more than 500 gold bars, and over 1,000 land-use right certificates of various types.

The investigative agency is in the process of consolidating documents and evidence, expanding the investigation, recovering lost assets, and clarifying the wrongdoing of the defendants and related individuals.

Concerning the plan to expand the investigation into the case related to Van Thinh Phat Group, the Ministry spokesperson shared that the Ho Chi Minh City High-Level People’s Court is preparing for the appellate trial of phase 1 of the Van Thinh Phat and SCB case.

Following phase 1, the Ministry’s Investigation Police Agency continued its investigation and has now completed and proposed the prosecution of 34 defendants in cases of fraud, embezzlement, money laundering, and illegal cross-border currency transportation, among other charges.

“As such, the case has been expanded, and phase 2 has concluded with investigation results. The agency is also investigating bribery and abuse of power cases that occurred in Lam Dong province and other localities related to Van Thinh Phat and SCB,” said Major General Tuyen.

Also, at the press conference, regarding the Phuc Son Group case, Mr. Nguyen Huu Dong, Deputy Head of the Central Internal Affairs Committee, added that 23 defendants have been prosecuted so far, including six officials managed by the Central level, comprising one secretary, one former secretary, one standing vice secretary of the Provincial Party Committee, two chairmen, and one former chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee.

In the case of Thuân An, according to Mr. Dong, eight defendants have been prosecuted, including two officials managed by the Central level, namely one secretary of the Provincial Party Committee and one deputy chief of the National Assembly Office.

Regarding the Van Thinh Phat Group case, Mr. Dong mentioned that, for the first time, a private business owner was sentenced to death for embezzlement, and four others received life imprisonment. Among those sentenced to prison terms, 17 defendants were given suspended sentences.

Mr. Dong also stated that the Steering Committee has requested speeding up the process of verifying and investigating corrupt and negative behaviors in cases and matters with signs of corruption and economic violations.

It has also urged the resolution of pending cases, especially those related to Thuân An, Phuc Son, and Van Thinh Phat Groups, as well as cases and matters involving personnel changes at party committees and authorities at all levels.
