On the evening of August 16, the People’s Council, People’s Committee, and Fatherland Front Committee of Dong Hoi City held a solemn ceremony in Ho Chi Minh Square to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the city’s foundation (August 16, 2004 – August 16, 2024) and the 70th anniversary of its liberation (August 18, 1954 – August 18, 2024). The event also marked the receipt of a commendation from the Prime Minister.

At the ceremony, Mr. Tran Phong, Secretary of the Dong Hoi Party Committee, affirmed that the establishment of Dong Hoi City 20 years ago was a significant milestone, marking the maturity of not only Dong Hoi but also Quang Binh Province as a whole. All sectors, including the economy, culture, and society, have achieved remarkable results.

The quality of life for the people of Dong Hoi has also improved significantly. The per capita income, which was 8.7 million VND in 2004, has now increased tenfold to reach around 90 million VND per year. The poverty rate has decreased dramatically, from 7.65% in 2004 to 0.28% in 2023.

Over the past 20 years, Dong Hoi has transformed from a low-lying market town into a vibrant, civilized, and modern city. The city’s economy has grown steadily, with a fairly high increase in state budget revenue, exceeding the estimates quite significantly. The total state budget revenue from 2004 to April 2024 reached VND 17,178 billion.

The industrial sector continues to develop, effectively harnessing the city’s potential and advantages. From 2004 to 2024, the industrial production value increased at an average rate of 5.42% per year. There are currently six stable and efficient industrial clusters and one handicraft industry in the city.

In the tourism sector, Dong Hoi has maintained its reputation and brand, becoming a key economic sector and spreading the image of Quang Binh Province, in general, and Dong Hoi City, in particular, on the domestic and international tourism map.

The infrastructure serving commercial, service, and tourism activities has been invested in and gradually improved, especially supermarkets, malls, hotels, and restaurants. Additionally, resources have been mobilized to invest in developing Khe Chuoi Tourist Area (Quang Phu), Bao Ninh 2 Beach, expanding and upgrading infrastructure at Nhat Le, Bao Ninh, and Quang Phu beaches, refurbishing the Mother Suot statue area, and improving the infrastructure of the walking street and Bao Ninh Sea Square…

Dong Hoi City has witnessed remarkable development over the past 20 years

The number of high-quality accommodation and resort facilities is increasing, and new and diverse tourism products and types are being developed to meet the tastes and demands of tourists. By harnessing the potential and advantages of the local natural and cultural environment, eco-tourism products that protect the natural environment have been successfully developed. As a result, in 2023-2024, Dong Hoi welcomed over 2,906,000 tourists, with an average annual increase of 6.63% during the 2004-2024 period.

Several key projects have been constructed, managed, and exploited effectively, creating focal points for the city, such as Dong Hoi Airport, Nhat Le Bridge 2, Bao Ninh Sea Square 1 and 2, Nhat Le Park, and urban areas like Bao Ninh 1 and 2 and the new Phu Hai Ward residential area.

The total social investment capital in Dong Hoi City from 2004 to the present is VND 61,924 billion, including VND 12,119 billion from the state budget and VND 49,805 billion mobilized from other sources and the people.

The city has also attracted investors from within and outside the province to commercial, service, and tourism projects, contributing to socio-economic development and creating jobs for local workers.
