The Theft of Hundreds of Panax Vietnamensis Plants

A company in Tu Mo Rong District, Kon Tum Province, has fallen victim to thieves who stole approximately 160 precious Ngoc Linh ginseng roots.

Mr. Vo Trung Manh, Chairman of the Tu Mo Rong District People’s Committee (Kon Tum), reported a recent incident of stolen Ngoc Linh ginseng plants aged over three years in Ngok Lay commune.

According to the report, on August 21, the Tu Mo Rong Ngoc Linh Ginseng Company’s ginseng garden experienced a sudden power outage. The next morning, on August 22, employees discovered that the power cable had been cut with a knife while repairing the electricity.

Upon inspection, company staff found shoe prints left on the ginseng beds. The fence in that area was also found tilted, indicating forced entry by the perpetrators.

The company estimated a loss of approximately 160 Ngoc Linh ginseng roots, aged between three and seven years, with a total damage cost of nearly VND 200 million.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Duyen, Director of Tu Mo Rong Ngoc Linh Ginseng Company (Kon Tum), stated that they have filed a report with the authorities to identify the perpetrators. This is the first time the company has experienced such a significant loss of Ngoc Linh ginseng, severely impacting their business. The company has also advised its employees to be more vigilant to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Mr. Manh assured that the case is currently under investigation by the local police. Additionally, the district has instructed relevant departments and communal police forces to strengthen surveillance and take proactive measures to prevent theft, especially targeting Ngoc Linh ginseng.

Previously, in February 2024, over 800 Ngoc Linh ginseng plants, aged between four and ten years, were stolen from four communes in Tu Mo Rong District: Te Xang, Ngok Lay, Dak Sao, and Dak Na.
