Apple’s annual event is expected to take place in early September, possibly around September 10. In addition to the launch of the iPhone 16 lineup, the event is also anticipated to introduce new AirPods and upgraded Apple Watch models, among other possible product reveals.
However, the launch of new products also means saying goodbye to some older devices, which are likely to be discontinued and phased out of Apple Stores and retail outlets as early as next month.
iPhone 15 Pro & iPhone 15 Pro Max
Following tradition, Apple typically discontinues its flagship iPhone models a year after their release, and this is likely to be the case with the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max. Introduced in 2023, these devices marked the first use of titanium by Apple, a notable feature that is unlikely to appear in the upcoming iPhone 16 Pro series. Additionally, the iPhone 15 Pro also saw the end of the 6.1-inch and 6.7-inch screen sizes, as the iPhone 16 Pro is expected to feature larger displays.
iPhone 14 Plus
The iPhone 14 Plus, introduced in 2022, is likely to be discontinued next month. It features a large 6.7-inch display and long-lasting battery life at a lower price point compared to the Pro Max model. The iPhone 14 Plus also marked the return of the “Plus” branding, which had been absent since the iPhone 8 Plus in 2017. However, with Apple’s strategy of retaining older models at lower price points, the iPhone 14 Plus is likely to be discontinued, while the iPhone 14 may continue to be sold for a while longer.
iPhone 13
Released in 2021, the iPhone 13 brought several improvements, including longer battery life and a new camera system. Currently priced at $599 after multiple price drops, the iPhone 13 is expected to be discontinued as it enters its third year. If history repeats itself, the iPhone 14 may replace the iPhone 13 at the $599 price point until the iPhone SE 4 is released.
Apple Watch Series 9, Ultra 2, and SE 2
Upgrades to all three Apple Watch models are expected to be unveiled in September. Rumors suggest that the new Apple Watch Series 10 will feature a larger display, thinner casing, and a new processor, while the Ultra 3 may only receive minor updates. The Apple Watch SE 3 could switch to a plastic casing to target a lower price point. If all these models are updated, Apple is likely to discontinue the current Series 9, Ultra 2, and SE 2 watches.
AirPods 2 and AirPods 3
Since their launch in 2019, the AirPods 2 have served as Apple’s affordable wireless earbud option, but their time might be coming to an end. Apple is expected to introduce two versions of the AirPods 4 next month – one to replace the AirPods 2 and a mid-range option to succeed the AirPods 3. With the anticipated addition of noise-canceling to the mid-range model, both the AirPods 2 and AirPods 3 are likely to be discontinued.
iPad mini 6 and iPad 10
The iPad mini 6 and iPad 10 are two of Apple’s most affordable tablets, and updates to these devices are expected soon. The iPad mini 6, released in 2021, may be replaced by a new model with larger storage capacity and support for the Apple Pencil Pro. The iPad 10, which saw a price drop earlier this year, could be discontinued or further discounted as Apple prepares to launch the iPad 11.
