What was once a foreign concept, cremation has now become a more familiar and accepted practice in Vietnam. Along with this need, some businesses have emerged as providers of storage space for the deceased’s ashes.
According to our reporter’s findings, the ashes of the deceased can be entrusted to temples or memorial parks. The contribution amount depends on the facility or the giver’s goodwill. Some ash storage facilities charge over 75 million VND per niche, along with other premium services.
One such service is the Tu An Bao Tower, managed and operated by Happiness Cycle at the Minh Dang Quang Institute (in Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City). According to their website, the complex can store 5,058 niches of ashes, currently holding 2,440 niches (48.24%).
This project has been operational since 2015, allowing for perpetual worship or until there are changes in state policies and the guidelines of the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha.
“The area benefits from natural lighting, well-planned directions, and a spacious and airy design to create a comfortable atmosphere and promote positive energy flow. A variety of options cater to individual spiritual beliefs and Feng Shui considerations,” Happiness Cycle describes this ash storage facility.
According to the published rates, a single niche on the fifth floor of the Tu An Tower, measuring 27x27x27 cm, starts at 60 million VND. This price excludes management fees. A double niche is priced at 120 million VND, also excluding management fees.
The total cost for the first ten years amounts to 77.5 million VND
At Mekong Memorial Park (Can Tho), the ash storage area is named An Vien Vinh Hang. The website lists the price as 26 million VND per niche.
The ash niches are made of granite and come with a headstone and enamel photo. The dimensions of the niche are 30cm x 30cm x 70cm. There is space for an incense burner and offerings in front of each niche. Buddhist sutras are recited daily. On the annual Vu Lan festival, a prayer ceremony for the deceased is held.
Mekong Memorial Park offers flexible payment support, allowing for installments over ten months when purchasing in advance for relatives.
In Long An, An Binh Vien Memorial Park also offers ash niche services. According to a quote from January 2023, ash storage at the An Binh Vien Prayer House, along with care services, costs 15 million VND for 15 years from the contract signing date. This period is not tied to the actual usage timeframe.
The Long Tho Crematorium Tower (Cu Chi, Ho Chi Minh City) provides detailed pricing based on towers, niche locations, and duration of storage. For instance, the service fee for ash storage on the third floor of the tower ranges from 0.5 to 1 million VND if stored for less than a year. For long-term storage, the fee can go up to 25 million VND.
The ten-story ash storage tower within the same complex has prices reaching 75 million VND for niches on the sixth to eighth floors, third row. Care services are charged separately: 500,000 VND per niche for three years, payable once after signing the contract; 2.5 million VND per niche for ten years, payable once after signing the contract; and 2.5 million VND per niche for long-term storage, payable once for the first ten years, followed by an annual payment of 300,000 VND.
Thus, the total cost for a premium niche at Long Tho Tower for the first ten years could reach 77.5 million VND.
Binh Duong Memorial Park (Thu Dau Mot, Binh Duong) offers ash storage options for 5, 10, and 50 years, with corresponding fees of 5 million, 7 million, and 12 million VND, respectively. Meanwhile, Vinh Hang Memorial Park (Kien Giang) offers single niches for up to 50 years at a maximum price of 12 million VND and double niches for 20 million VND.
