The information was revealed in a recent report published by OAG, a leading global organization specializing in travel and aviation statistics. The organization states that the statistics are based on the world’s largest network of flight and market information. Based on this, OAG has identified the most successful airlines and airports in the Asia-Pacific region from 2019 to 2023.

According to OAG, Vietjet Air leads in two categories for low-cost airlines with the strongest growth in both operating capacity and flight frequency on short-haul routes (under 4,630 km).

Following the Vietnamese airline in these two categories is India’s Indigo. For long-haul flights, OAG identifies Air India as the leading airline in terms of both capacity and operating frequency, followed by Singapore’s Scoot.

In addition, OAG also honors Vietjet as the “network expansion champion” airline for opening a series of new routes in 2023. The second and third positions in this category are also taken by two Indian airlines, Vistara and Indigo, respectively.

Last year, Vietjet expanded with an additional 33 international and domestic routes. As a result, the airline now operates a network of 125 routes, including 80 international routes. This low-cost airline operated around 133,000 flights, transporting over 25 million passengers, including more than 7.6 million international passengers (an increase of 183% compared to 2022).

Vietjet also became the first Vietnamese airline to have routes connecting to five cities in Australia, including Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide, and Brisbane. At the same time, it is also the airline with the most flights between Vietnam and India, with destinations such as Delhi, Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Kochi, and Tiruchirappalli.

The expansion of international routes will continue for Vietjet until 2024. Since the beginning of this year, the airline has continuously added routes from Vietnam to Vientiane (Laos), Chengdu (China), Hiroshima (Japan), and most recently, Hanoi – Melbourne.

In the airport rankings, OAG identifies Incheon (South Korea) as the airport with the most international connections in January 2024. It is followed by Changi (Singapore) and Bangkok (Thailand).

The airports with the fastest growth in operating capacity in the fourth quarter of 2023 compared to the same period in 2022 are Hong Kong, Beijing Capital, and Urumqi (China). Compared to 2019, Beijing Daxing is identified as having the highest number of new international routes, followed by Macau and Almaty (Kazakhstan).

“With a large number of aircraft orders, increasing income, and growing travel demand, the Asia-Pacific region will lead the aviation industry’s growth in the decade,” commented Mayur Patel, Head of the Asia-Pacific region at OAG.
