The expansion of operations and diversification of international sea routes have affirmed Chu Lai Port’s role as a central connector for import and export activities in the Central and Tay Nguyen regions of Vietnam.
Partnering with RCL – Asia’s Leading International Container Shipping Line
On August 28, the MTT SAISUNEE vessel (Malaysian flag) from RCL arrived at Chu Lai Port, marking the beginning of a new sea route directly connecting to India. The ship carries automotive parts, machinery, fruits, household goods, furniture, garments, and more for export to India from businesses in the Tam Thang Industrial Park, THACO Chu Lai (Quang Nam), and VSIP (Quang Ngai).
RCL is one of Asia’s premier shipping companies, established in 1979 in Thailand. They currently own and operate 49 container ships serving 69 destinations in India and other countries in Asia and the Middle East. Their fleet has a total capacity of nearly 79,000 TEUs and meets international safety and environmental protection standards.

Initially, Chu Lai Port is collaborating with RCL to operate a sea route from Xiamen (China) – Chu Lai – Port Klang (Malaysia) – Chennai – Kolkata – Kattupalli (India), with a frequency of three trips per month. This provides customers with cost-effective transportation options while developing the import and export market in the Central and Tay Nguyen regions.
Diverse Sea Routes, Enhanced Service Capacity
As a crucial import and export gateway in Central Vietnam and a hub for transshipment cargo from Tay Nguyen (Vietnam), Laos, and Cambodia, Chu Lai Port is actively partnering with international shipping lines (SITC, CMA CGM, ZIM, RCL, etc.) to operate intra-Asia services directly connecting to China, South Korea, and Japan, as well as trans-Pacific routes to markets in the Americas and Europe.
Chu Lai Port: Diversifying sea routes and enhancing service capacity
Especially with the addition of direct routes to major Indian ports such as Chennai, Kolkata, Kattupalli, Nhava Sheva, and Mundra, Chu Lai Port has provided optimal transportation solutions, meeting the import and export demands of businesses in the region. This development facilitates the entry of Vietnamese goods into the South Asian market through the “gateway” of India. From now on, instead of transshipping to ports in the south and north, Central Vietnam businesses can import and export goods to and from India directly through Chu Lai Port, significantly reducing time and costs.
Mr. Phan Van Ky, Director of Chu Lai Port, shared: “We are focusing on investing in and upgrading synchronous infrastructure and applying information technology in port operations to enhance service quality. This increases our connectivity with international shipping lines and attracts cargo from import and export regions through the port.”
With the diversification of new sea routes and the ever-expanding customer network, the volume of cargo handled by Chu Lai Port is expected to increase by over 40% in 2024 compared to 2023.
Chu Lai Port: Towards becoming an international cargo transshipment center
In the coming time, Chu Lai Port will continue to promote cooperation with international shipping lines to increase the frequency of vessels and complete and operate the 50,000-ton berth to receive large-capacity vessels, meeting the market’s growing demands. Furthermore, the port will enhance the efficiency of berth, warehouse, and vehicle operations and focus on exploiting products with high development potential in Tay Nguyen (Vietnam), Laos, and Cambodia, such as agricultural, forestry, and mineral exports.
Along with service quality improvement solutions, Chu Lai Port is also streamlining processes, procedures, and system optimization to gradually realize its goal of becoming an international cargo transshipment center.
