VinFast’s Plans for India: A Comprehensive Overview

As VinFast seeks to expand its global presence, it has identified India as a key market, setting ambitious plans and goals. This has caught the attention of the Indian media, prompting various observations and comments.

According to Autocar India , VinFast aims to achieve a 5-star safety rating from Bharat NCAP for its VF 6 and VF 7 models.

In India, VinFast has established a manufacturing facility with an initial capacity of 50,000 units per year, scalable up to three times that amount. It remains unclear if there will be any significant technical modifications to the vehicles; however, some adjustments have been made to better cater to the needs of consumers in the world’s most populous country.

Notable changes to the VinFast VF 6 and VF 7 models for the Indian market include thicker-walled tires, smaller rims, a 190 mm ground clearance, a wireless charging tray for the VF 7, and modified door pockets capable of accommodating 1-liter water bottles.

Meanwhile, The Hindu commends VinFast’s long-term and comprehensive strategy, noting that the company is not solely focused on large cities but is also committed to expanding its network of dealerships and charging stations in tier 2 and 3 cities , which are witnessing a surge in demand for electric vehicles.

Sharing a similar viewpoint, Motoroids observes that VinFast is ” not just playing it safe ” but is, in fact, ” making a big bet ” on the Indian market. The publication emphasizes VinFast’s strategic move to set up a factory in Tamil Nadu and develop localized products, positioning itself competitively.

VinFast VF 6: A Bold Departure

The VinFast VF 6 has garnered positive reviews from the Indian media, particularly for its design, technology, and competitive pricing. ZigWheels describes the VF 6 as a bold SUV that ” defies traditional SUV norms ” and embraces a modern coupe-like style. The 12.9-inch screen acts as a central command center, replacing traditional instrument clusters for a minimalist and almost Nordic-style interior.

Autocar India views the VinFast VF 6 as a formidable rival to the indigenous Curvv EV, highlighting its array of comfort features. The vehicle also boasts advanced safety features such as Level 2 ADAS, seven airbags, a large infotainment system, and OTA updates. The cabin is praised for its spaciousness and amenities like heated and cooled seats, wireless charging, and a panoramic sunroof.

However, some shortcomings have been pointed out. NDTV Auto notes that the absence of a sunshade for the fixed sunroof could make the car uncomfortably warm in India’s harsh climate.

In response, Autocar India mentions that VinFast has acknowledged the feedback regarding the sunroof and plans to include a sunshade when the vehicle goes on sale.

VinFast VF 7: Evoking European Sensibilities

While the VF 6 emphasizes practicality and convenience, the VF 7 represents VinFast’s foray into the premium electric SUV segment in India. HT Auto regards the VF 7 as a strategic debut that could ” establish VinFast as a premium brand .” Its athletic design, distinctive V-shaped LED lights, and robust body give the VF 7 a distinct presence in its class. The interior features high-quality materials, and the rear seats can recline, offering a flat floor and ample space.

Performance-wise, the VinFast VF 7 AWD boasts an impressive 349 horsepower and 500 Nm of torque , accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in just 5.8 seconds . Autocar India characterizes the VF 7 as a ” performance-oriented ” vehicle that can compete with the likes of the BYD Atto 3 and Mahindra XEV 9e.

ABP Live adds that the VinFast VF 7 delivers a European-style sporty driving experience , feeling agile and distinct from its competitors in the segment. However, similar to the VF 6, the test vehicles lacked a sunshade for the sunroof.
