Power industry finds the reason for the sudden increase in April’s electricity bill in Ho Chi Minh City

In Ho Chi Minh City, where average temperatures exceed 35 degrees Celsius, and can reach up to 40 degrees Celsius at noon, the demand for cooling devices such as air conditioners and electric fans in companies, businesses, and households has skyrocketed. This has resulted in increased electricity consumption, leading to higher electricity bills in the categories of 4-5-6, as per the retail electricity price regulations issued by the Ministry of Industry and Trade in 2023. According to the Ho Chi Minh City Power Corporation (EVNHCMC), this surge in electricity consumption is the primary reason for the spike in electricity bills for the month of April.

Electricity consumption surged in April 2024 at a household

1.8 Million Customers Consuming Electricity from Tier 4 and Above

Specifically, in April 2024, Ho Chi Minh City’s total power consumption reached over 2.75 billion kWh, an increase of 12.44% compared to 2.44 billion kWh in March 2024. Out of 2.47 million household customers in the city, 1.8 million customers consumed electricity from tier 4 and above (accounting for 75% of total household customers) with an electricity consumption of over 1.44 billion kWh (accounting for 52.38% of total output and an increase of 20% in March 2024).

There were days when electricity consumption in the city exceeded 100 million kWh/day. Specifically, on April 24, it was 101.47 million kWh, on April 25, it was 103.99 million kWh, and on April 26, it was 103.46 million kWh. This was the main reason for the high electricity bills in April this year compared to previous months.

Electricity consumption by day in April 2024

From the beginning of April 2024, EVNHCMC has continuously issued warnings to customers that electricity bills will increase sharply in April due to the high power consumption in April this year because of the unusually hot weather that lasted continuously.

According to the forecast of the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting, the temperature in May will decrease compared to April but will still be high. Therefore, EVNHCMC suggests and recommends that customers, households implement electricity-saving solutions, especially cooling devices such as air conditioners, evaporative coolers, etc.

Ho Chi Minh City Requires Comprehensive Electricity Saving

Faced with the situation of increasing load demand and to ensure a stable electricity supply, on April 26, 2024, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee issued Official Letter No. 2325/UBND-KT on promoting electricity saving and ensuring a safe and stable electricity supply in the city during the 2024 dry season and subsequent years.

EVNHCMC renovates the power grid to serve people during the hot season

Accordingly, the Ho Chi Minh City People’s Committee recommends adjusting air conditioners to 26 degrees Celsius or higher, turning on air conditioners 60 minutes late, and turning them off 60 minutes earlier than the start and end of working hours for administrative agencies, office buildings. Turn off or reduce by 50% the capacity of the lighting system in hallways, parking lots, yards, public areas, encourage the use of stairs between nearby floors; maximize the use of natural light in the workplace.

For shopping malls and service establishments, in addition to the above requirements, all decorative lighting, advertising, and signboards must be turned off from 10 pm; participate in load adjustment programs when requested by the electricity company; encourage the use of backup generators to actively increase the electricity supply. Industrial establishments and production facilities shift part of their production activities after 10 pm.

For traffic lighting systems, adjust the time to turn on the lights 30 minutes late and turn them off 30 minutes earlier than the current plan, ensuring traffic safety; reduce the lighting system capacity by 50% from 10 pm on roads with low traffic.

For advertising and decorative lighting systems, turn off or reduce by 50% the advertising lighting system from 10 pm; turn off all decorative lighting systems from 10 pm.

Households thoroughly implement electricity-saving measures in the household, turn off appliances when not in use, use air conditioners at 26 degrees Celsius or more, and maximize the use of natural light in the house.
