On July 6, the Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee and the T&T-CIENCO 4 investor consortium officially broke ground on the Quang Tri Airport project, with a total investment of over VND 5,800 billion. This will be the second airport in the country to be built through a public-private partnership (PPP), following Van Don Airport.
Completing the puzzle of synchronized transportation network
Quang Tri Airport is designated as one of the 16 domestic airports for the period of 2021-2030 and one of the 19 envisioned for 2050, as per the Master Plan for the Development of the National Airport and Airfield System for 2021-2030, with a vision towards 2050.
Along with projects like the Cam Lo-La Son Expressway, National Highway 15D, the trans-Asian road connecting Laos and Thailand, the coastal road linking the East-West Economic Corridor, the Lao Bao-Cam Lo Expressway, the My Thuy deep-water port, and the My Thuy-Dong Ha-Lao Bao railway, Quang Tri Airport is a crucial piece in completing the province’s synchronized transportation network across all domains. This will create a driving force and opportunities for Quang Tri to accelerate and break through.
Airport serves as a “launchpad” for Quang Tri’s aspirations
Mr. Vo Van Hung, Chairman of the Quang Tri Provincial People’s Committee, shared that Quang Tri is where two vital national and regional corridors intersect, following the East-West and North-South axes. For this reason, the province has been centrally planned to incorporate diverse transportation modes.
“The Quang Tri Airport project symbolizes peace and embodies the province’s aspiration to open its skies and soar to new heights,” emphasized Mr. Hung.
Mr. Hung assured that the local authorities would facilitate the investors in executing the airport project and requested that the consortium proceed with the project immediately after the groundbreaking, ensuring timely completion and superior quality.

Significant challenges and opportunities lie ahead
Speaking at the ceremony, Deputy Prime Minister Le Thanh Long acknowledged the pivotal role of transportation infrastructure, including airports, in spurring economic and social development. “Where there is transportation, there is progress,” he asserted.
In alignment with this understanding, the Resolution of the 13th Party Congress and the Politburo’s Resolution No. 26 on socio-economic development and national defense and security in the North-Central region emphasize the construction of a synchronous and modern infrastructure system as one of three strategic breakthroughs.
The Quang Tri provincial authorities are urged to extend their utmost support to the investors, construction units, and consultants throughout the project’s execution, particularly in ensuring the timely clearance of the project site and providing resettlement for affected residents, while maintaining security and order. Additionally, rigorous inspection and supervision should be conducted to guarantee the project’s quality.
To maximize the benefits of air transportation, the province should proactively devise mechanisms, policies, and plans for socio-economic development, especially in the realm of spiritual and heritage tourism, effectively harnessing the province’s potential and advantages, including its nature reserves and pristine beaches.
