On July 7, 2024, the Tien Giang Provincial Police’s Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention, in collaboration with relevant units and the Cai Lay District Police, investigated and worked with the owner of the “Jerry Hanh” Facebook account regarding the posting of false information online.
According to the police, on the morning of July 6, 2024, the “Jerry Hanh” Facebook account posted the following: “What’s with all the fuss so early in the morning, guys? For those who bought PN fake gold since Tet, go get it checked. Especially those who bought gold for weddings, do check as they apparently caught the goldsmith… Lucky me, I didn’t have the money to buy any.”
This false information garnered interactions from numerous personal accounts, negatively impacting the psychology of many individuals and adversely affecting the company’s business operations.
After being questioned by the authorities, “Jerry Hanh” admitted to the violation. Due to a lack of legal understanding, upon hearing rumors about the incident at the gold, silver, and jewelry company, “Jerry Hanh” immediately posted about it on social media with the intention of increasing social media interactions to promote and sell cosmetics.
“Jerry Hanh” removed the post and published a correction on their personal page: “Yesterday, on July 6, 2024, I unintentionally posted about PN jewelry store. I apologize to the owner of PN jewelry store and everyone. I posted false information that was not true”; and pledged to the authorities not to repeat the offense.
The case is being further investigated and will be strictly handled by the Tien Giang Provincial Police’s Department of Cyber Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention in accordance with the law.
Article 101, Clause 1, of the Government’s Decree No. 15/2020/ND-CP dated February 3, 2020, stipulates a fine of between VND 10 million and VND 20 million for the act of taking advantage of social networks to provide or share fake news, false information, distorted information, slanderous information, or information that offends the prestige of agencies and organizations and the honor and dignity of individuals; or to provide or share fabricated information that causes public concern.
