In a significant milestone, Lazada has turned a corner, with a trusted source revealing that the company’s monthly Earnings Before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization (EBITDA) turned positive for the first time in history in July. During an internal meeting on Tuesday, Lazada Group CEO James Dong highlighted this as a pivotal moment, underscoring the effectiveness of the company’s business strategy. Achieving positive EBITDA not only validates the company’s approach but also fuels Lazada’s continued investment in Southeast Asia, reinforcing a sustainable and long-term growth trajectory.

Previously, Alibaba had announced that Lazada’s loss per order had significantly decreased due to improved profitability and logistics cost optimization.

Logistics cost optimization played a significant role in reducing losses per order.

While Alibaba did not disclose specific financial figures for Lazada, it remains a key player in the group’s international e-commerce portfolio, a rapidly growing sector. In the last fiscal year, Alibaba recorded an adjusted EBITDA loss of 8.035 billion yuan (approximately $1.12 billion) for this segment, an increase from the 4.94 billion yuan loss the year before, mainly due to higher investment costs.

As of the end of March, revenue from Alibaba’s international e-commerce business, including brands like AliExpress, Trendyol, Alibaba.com, and Daraz, had grown by 45% year-over-year to 27.45 billion yuan (approximately $3.8 billion), significantly outpacing the group’s overall growth rate of 7%.

Headquartered in Singapore, Lazada currently operates in six Southeast Asian countries and aims to reach 300 million customers by 2030. Since its inception in 2012, Lazada has faced intense competition from rivals such as Sea, Amazon, and TikTok Shop. Alibaba acquired a stake in Lazada in 2016 and has since continuously refined its strategy to replicate its domestic success in the international arena.

Lazada remains committed to investing in international markets, particularly Southeast Asia.
