The bustling flag-making village of Tu Van prepares for Vietnam’s National Day on September 2nd. For over 70 years, the artisans of this village have meticulously crafted and preserved the sacred art of embroidering and sewing the national flag, instilling a sense of patriotic pride in every stitch.

As Vietnam prepares to commemorate its 79th National Day on September 2nd, the flag makers of Tu Van village in Le Loi commune, Thuong Tin district, Hanoi, are hard at work to meet the country’s demand for flags.

Tu Van village is renowned as Hanoi’s largest maker of national flags, playing a pivotal role in significant national events.

Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc, a long-time flag business owner in Tu Van, shared with Tien Phong that the flag market is bustling this year, especially as National Day approaches. At his workshop, employees work overtime to meet market demands. “From cutting fabric to different sizes, printing the star, embroidering, and sewing—each step is meticulously carried out with the artisans’ dedication and passion,” Mr. Phuc said.

“Every stitch and thread we sew embodies our pride and responsibility, contributing to the majestic flight of the national flag,” Mr. Phuc added.

In Tu Van village, many families have passed down the tradition of making national flags for four generations. This occupation not only provides a stable income but also instills pride and connects them to the village’s sacred heritage.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Huan diligently embroiders the national flag. “Embroidery of a flag by hand is a meticulous process that usually takes two to three days. For newcomers to the craft, it can take up to a week. Each stitch and thread embroidered onto the flag demands absolute precision,” Ms. Huan shared.

Each stitch and thread is carefully and accurately sewn to create the vibrant image of the golden five-pointed star on the rich red fabric.

According to the people of Tu Van village, flag production used to be a time-consuming process. However, many workshops have now adopted advanced machinery and computer programming, resulting in improved accuracy and productivity.

For large-scale flags used on islands, the choice of fabric is crucial as they must withstand harsh weather conditions, such as strong sunlight and sea breezes. Every step, from fabric selection to cutting, sewing, printing, and finishing, must be meticulously executed to ensure the flags’ durability and quality.

“Whenever I see the national flags flying high, bearing my imprint, I feel an immense sense of pride. That is my joy and motivation to love and dedicate myself to this craft even more,” shared a worker at Mr. Phuc’s workshop.

Nowadays, few young people in the village pursue this arduous craft. To pass on the tradition to future generations, many families introduce their children to the trade at a young age, instilling in them an awareness of its significance and a sense of pride in Tu Van’s heritage.

The flag-making mold is not just a production tool but also a symbol of patriotism and national pride.

The workshop can produce thousands of flags daily. During peak times like National Day on September 2nd, production may increase, requiring continuous work throughout the day.
