On December 29, the Quang Nam People’s Committee Office announced that Mr. Le Van Dung, Chairman of the Provincial People’s Committee, had just sent a dispatch to the Ministry of Transport proposing an investment plan to upgrade and expand National Highway 14B through Quang Nam province.

According to the dispatch, National Highway 14B is 74 km long, starting at Tien Sa Port (Da Nang city) and ending at Thanh My town, Nam Giang district, Quang Nam province. Of this, the section from Tien Sa Port to Tuy Loan (over 24 km) is currently operating with six lanes.

The 8-km section from Tuy Loan to the border of Dai Hiep commune, Dai Loc district, Quang Nam province, is operating with two lanes and is being expanded to six lanes through a joint investment by the Ministry of Transport and Da Nang city.

The remaining section, nearly 42 km long and belonging to Quang Nam province (from Dai Hiep commune to Thanh My town), has only two lanes (with a 9-meter-wide roadbed).

Currently, the traffic flow on National Highway 14B is increasing rapidly, including trucks from Laos entering through National Highway 14D, which has been completely damaged. National Highway 14B accommodates an average of 4,813 motor vehicles per day and night, including approximately 1,232 heavy trucks with three or more axles.

With such traffic volume, the highway has exceeded its capacity and started to show signs of damage, including cracks and localized subsidence, especially on the left lane.

According to the Quang Nam People’s Committee, the master plan for the road network for the period of 2021-2030, with a vision towards 2050, approved by the Prime Minister, identifies National Highway 14B as a key route in Central Vietnam and the Central Highlands. It is designed as a Grade III-IV road with two to four lanes. While the traffic volume on this route is significant, the section passing through Quang Nam province has not been upgraded or expanded.

Therefore, the Quang Nam People’s Committee proposed an investment plan to upgrade and expand the 41.9-km section of National Highway 14B within the province. The total estimated investment is VND 2,545 billion, including VND 1,290 billion for the main route and VND 1,255 billion for the frontage roads.
