ACB Founder Tran Mong Hung Passes Away

Tran Mong Hung, the founder and former chairman of Asia Commercial Bank (HOSE: ACB), was reported to have passed away on April 25.

According to the obituary posted by Mr. Tran Hung Huy – Chairman of ACB, former Chairman of ACB Tran Mong Hung passed away on April 25, 2024, at the age of 72.

Mr. Tran Mong Hung was born in 1953 in Tien Giang. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Banking from Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics and was one of the founders of ACB in 1993, together with two other shareholders, Mr. Pham Trung Cang and Mr. Trinh Kim Quang. Prior to that, he was a lecturer at the Banking College from 1978 to 1980. 

In 2008, Mr. Hung withdrew from the Board of Directors after 15 years as Chairman of ACB and retired as an advisor. He returned to the Board of Directors after the Bau Kien incident in 2012.

Mr. Hung’s wife is Ms. Dang Thu Thuy (currently a member of the Board of Directors of ACB). They have three children: Tran Dang Thu Thao, Tran Hung Huy (currently holding the position of Chairman of the Board of Directors of ACB), and Tran Minh Hoang.

According to the ACB’s 2023 governance report, as of early 2024, Mr. Tran Mong Hung was still Vice Chairman of ACB’s Risk Management Committee. However, he did not hold any ACB shares. 

His son, Chairman Tran Hung Huy, owns more than 133 million ACB shares, equivalent to 3.43%. Ms. Dang Thi Thu Thuy – Mr. Tran Mong Hung’s wife, holds more than 46.39 million ACB shares, equivalent to 1.19% of the bank’s capital.
