Mineral-Rich Hot Springs in Vietnam: A Relaxing and Rejuvenating Experience
- Two Unique Mineral Hot Spring Mines in Vietnam
- The Numerous Health Benefits of Hot Spring Bathing
Hot Spring Mine with Water Temperatures Reaching 55°C and High Salinity
Vietnam is home to two distinctive mineral hot spring mines located in Cam Pha, Quang Ninh, a rarity on a global scale. Both of these hot spring sources are extracted from deep underground, boasting temperatures of up to 55°C and high salinity.
According to the Labor and Trade Union Magazine, the Quang Hanh hot spring water stands out for its distinctive characteristics. The water here is incredibly valuable, rich in minerals such as Ion Na+, Cl-, metasilicic acid, boric acid, and Brom, with high concentrations.
This mineral water not only offers beauty benefits but also supports overall health, reduces stress, promotes relaxation, and aids in skin and joint function restoration.
The Council for Mineral Resource Appraisal of the Vietnam Geological and Mineral Service (now the General Department of Geology and Minerals), under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, classifies Quang Hanh’s water as mineral water with a temperature of 40-42°C, mineralization of 19,164-23,140 mg/l, and a bromine content of 40.42-45.31 mg/l.
The mineral source here is abundant in health-beneficial minerals, with Ion Na+ and Cl- concentrations exceeding 20g/l. It also contains metasilicic and boric acids, and notably, a high level of Brom, reaching 40mg/l, which accounts for 49% of the total mineral content. This is one of the top three mineral hot spring mines in the world with the highest bromine content.
Prominent Benefits of Hot Spring Bathing
Additionally, the Quang Hanh hot spring water is free from sulfur and iron, and it maintains an ideal neutral pH level. As a result, bathing in this hot spring water does not leave a sticky feeling on the skin, providing maximum comfort for visitors to enjoy a relaxing and rejuvenating experience amidst the serene natural landscape.
Tuoi Tre Newspaper highlights that autumn is the season when the body can absorb the benefits of mineral water most effectively. During this transitional period, blood vessels constrict, leading to reduced blood circulation, which can exacerbate various health issues, particularly those related to the bones and joints. Hot spring bathing helps increase body temperature, causing blood vessels to dilate and improving blood flow, thereby alleviating swelling and inflammation in the joints.
A 2021 study published in the Inquiry journal, involving nearly 1,300 individuals with joint or muscle pain, including those with rheumatoid arthritis, found that 83% of participants experienced reduced joint pain symptoms after bathing in hot springs.
Furthermore, cardiovascular issues can be exacerbated by cold weather, leading to increased blood pressure and strain on the heart, potentially resulting in heart attacks. Immersing in hot spring water and combining it with steam helps minerals penetrate the bloodstream, regulating blood pressure and reducing the risk of cardiovascular diseases.
As the weather turns colder, skin problems like dry, cracked, and itchy skin become more prevalent due to decreased humidity. Hot spring bathing helps improve skin hydration and nourishment. Beyond treating various ailments, hot spring bathing promotes physical and mental relaxation, enhances blood circulation, and aids in nervous system recovery, leading to improved sleep quality after stressful periods of work or study.
A study by Loughborough University (UK) revealed that the increased body temperature after soaking in warm water triggers the release of anti-inflammatory signals, enhancing glucose metabolism in overweight individuals.
For a long time, the Quang Hanh hot spring has been a popular destination for mineral bathing among Quang Ninh residents. Even visitors from other provinces passing through Quang Ninh make it a point to relax in these hot springs whenever they get the chance.
People can enjoy this mineral-rich hot spring water at two locations: one within a high-end resort in Quang Hanh ward and the other at the Geological Hot Spring Rehabilitation Center, owned by the Coal and Mine Geology Joint Stock Company (TKV), in Cam Thach ward. The hot spring water at the Geological Hot Spring Rehabilitation Center was discovered in 1963 and is currently being extracted from well 28B, at a depth of 342.5m-402.5m.
According to the Lao Dong Newspaper, in 1989, the Coal and Mine Geology Joint Stock Company (TKV) began utilizing this mineral water source for bathing and therapeutic purposes for workers in the coal industry. The Geological Hot Spring Rehabilitation Center has received investments from the Vietnam National Coal and Mineral Industries Group, and its permitted extraction capacity stands at 1,000m3/day night.
In 2023, the Center attracted more than 113,000 visitors and generated revenue of over VND 16 billion. The Center offers affordable services, with prices ranging from VND 60,000-80,000 per visit, while the resort in Quang Hanh charges nearly VND 1 million per visit.
To meet the growing demand, a project is underway to upgrade and expand the Geological Hot Spring Rehabilitation Center into a Geological Hot Spring Resort, with a total investment of approximately VND 200 billion. The new bathing facility is expected to accommodate at least 200 guests per session, equivalent to approximately 1,100 guests per day.
