Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has directed that the 500kV power line project, with a transmission capacity of up to 2,400MW, be completed expeditiously. This important infrastructure project, known as the “500kV Mach 3” project, spans from Quang Trach in Quang Binh province to Pho Noi in Hung Yen province.
According to the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT), three out of four components of the project have been completed and energized: the 500kV power lines from Nam Dinh 1 Thermal Power Plant to Thanh Hoa, Nam Dinh 1 to Pho Noi, and Quynh Luu to Thanh Hoa.
The remaining component, the 500kV power line from Quang Trach to Quynh Luu, is currently under construction and is on track to be finished by August, in line with the Prime Minister’s directive.
To ensure the project’s timely completion, the Prime Minister has instructed Vietnam Electricity (EVN) and EVNNPT to concentrate their resources and work tirelessly with a sense of urgency. They are to embrace a “work-around-the-clock” mentality, coordinating closely and effectively to overcome any challenges that may arise.
The Ministry of Industry and Trade is tasked with overseeing the project, collaborating with relevant ministries and agencies to address any obstacles promptly. They are also responsible for conducting technical inspections and approvals in accordance with legal regulations to facilitate the project’s safe operation once completed.
While the majority of the work is nearing completion, EVNNPT acknowledges that there is still much to be done to meet the target deadline of September 2nd for the project’s inauguration and safe operation.
The 500kV Mach 3 project consists of four components, spanning almost 520km with 1,179 pole foundations and a total investment of approximately VND 22,000 billion. It passes through 211 communes and wards in 43 districts and towns across 9 provinces, including Quang Binh, Ha Tinh, Nghe An, Thanh Hoa, Ninh Binh, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, Hai Duong, and Hung Yen.
This project, under the leadership of EVNNPT and EVN, plays a crucial role in interconnecting the inter-regional power grid, ensuring a stable power supply to Northern Vietnam. Once operational, the 500 kV Quang Trach-Pho Noi power line is expected to increase transmission capacity to around 5,000 MW, significantly alleviating the current transmission limitations of 2,200 MW from Central to Northern Vietnam. Additionally, it will facilitate the transmission of power from thermal power plants and renewable energy sources in North-Central Vietnam, reducing the load on existing 500 kV power lines.
Multinational Corporation to Invest $10 Billion in Vietnam for Thermal Power Plant and Transmission Project
According to the Electricity Regulatory Agency, Tập đoàn Adani is currently interested in investing in several energy projects in Vietnam and would like to discuss these issues with EVN.
