The Power Line: A Monumental Achievement for the Nation

On the morning of August 29, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh attended the inauguration ceremony of the 500 kV power line project, known as the 'backbone' of Vietnam's electricity system. The event took place in Hung Yen province, marking a significant milestone in the country's energy infrastructure development. This project, spanning from Quang Trach in Quang Binh to Pho Noi in Hung Yen, is a testament to Vietnam's commitment to strengthening its power grid and ensuring a reliable and robust energy supply for its growing economy.

The event was organized by the Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) and the National Power Transmission Corporation (EVNNPT) in a hybrid format, with the main venue located at the 500 kV Pho Noi Substation in Hung Yen province, and eight other locations connected virtually, representing the eight provinces through which the project passes.

The 500kV Quang Trach – Pho Noi Line Project is a large-scale project with a total length of 519km, consisting of two circuits with 1,177 tower positions, and a total investment of over VND 22,300 billion (nearly USD 1 billion).

This urgent and important project is crucial to strengthening the transmission capacity of the 500 kV system from Central to Northern Vietnam, increasing it from 2,500 MW to 5,000 MW. It will enhance the stability of the power system, increase power supply to the North in 2025 and subsequent years, reduce congestion and overload risks for existing 500kV lines and substations, and contribute to ensuring national energy security.

According to EVN and EVNNPT, the project faced significant challenges during construction. However, by adopting new approaches and methods that differed from past practices, the project timeline was significantly shortened, meeting the completion deadline as directed by the Prime Minister. This achievement is unprecedented for 500 kV line construction projects, as similar projects in terms of scale and volume typically take three to four years to complete.

In comparison, the 500 kV Pleiku-My Phuoc-Cau Bong Line Project, spanning 437 km, took nearly three years to construct, while the 500 kV Vung Ang-Quang Trach-Doc Soi-Pleiku 2 Line Project, measuring 740 km, required almost four years of construction.

Despite the challenges, the 500 kV Quang Trach – Pho Noi Line Project was completed in approximately six months. In terms of structure, this project required the erection of 139,000 tons of steel towers, more than double the amount used in the 500 kV North-South Line Project’s first circuit, which needed 60,000 tons.

Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has consistently demonstrated his commitment to this project by chairing numerous progress review meetings and conducting onsite inspections. He has urged leaders of ministries, sectors, and localities, as well as political and social organizations, EVN, EVNNPT, consulting units, material and equipment suppliers, and construction units to embrace a determined mindset and work tirelessly, even under challenging weather conditions. With their unwavering determination and efforts, the project has been successfully completed and put into operation, meeting the Prime Minister’s directives.
