Compact Cars Face Growing Sales Challenges: Kia Morning Sells Just Over 200 Units in Nine Months

The once-dominant Kia Morning, a model that reigned supreme and became a flagship for the brand, now struggles to find buyers, with some months recording a mere 5 units sold.

According to a report from the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association, compact A-segment cars recorded low sales in the first nine months of the year. Specifically, the Kia Morning sold a total of 218 units, Mitsubishi Attrage sold 1,313 units, Toyota Wigo sold 1,657 units, and the Hyundai i10, with six variants priced between 360–455 million VND, performed better with 2,255 units sold.

Kia Morning’s Sales Plummet Dramatically

Mr. Trần Thanh Tuấn, a car showroom manager in Tân Bình District, Ho Chi Minh City, explained that the Morning’s slow sales stem from its outdated design in the standard version, priced at 349 million VND, which fails to meet buyer expectations. Meanwhile, the newer, sportier version is priced at 439 million VND, a range where buyers could opt for a compact 7-seater instead.

Similarly, the Attrage, despite its larger size compared to the Morning, retains a decade-old design. The base model, priced at 380 million VND with a manual transmission, lacks appeal, while the higher-end version nears 500 million VND—comparable to compact 7-seaters, further hindering sales.

Honda Brio Exits the Market

Previously, Honda introduced two compact models in Vietnam, both of which underperformed. The Jazz, launched in 2017 with prices ranging from 514–624 million VND, was discontinued in 2019 due to poor sales. Later that year, Honda introduced the Brio, priced between 418–452 million VND, but despite being 100 million VND cheaper than the Jazz, it failed to gain traction. Post-COVID-19, remaining Brio units were heavily discounted to clear inventory.
