Despite the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic and the slow global and domestic economic recovery, Thanh Hoa’s tourism sector has maintained a steady growth trajectory, ranking among the country’s top performers and significantly contributing to the province’s socio-economic development during the 2020-2025 term.
From 2020 to 2023, Thanh Hoa welcomed approximately 34.3 million visitors (including over 918,100 international tourists), achieving a growth rate of 6.6% annually. The tourism sector’s revenue reached an estimated VND 59,965 billion, with a remarkable yearly revenue increase of 14%.
In the first seven months of 2024, the province attracted over 12.9 million tourists, reflecting a 20.7% increase compared to the same period last year. Tourism revenue is estimated at VND 27,868 billion, a 40.5% surge from the previous year, and accounting for 86.1% of the plan. International tourists accounted for around 401,000, generating revenue of over USD 209.9 million, a 47.4% increase year on year.
Over the years, there has been a notable improvement in both the quantity and quality of human resources in the province’s tourism sector. Currently, Thanh Hoa has 56,300 workers in the tourism industry, an increase of 15,700 since 2020. Among them, 46,500 individuals, accounting for 82.6%, have received training and enhancement of their tourism business skills, a 3% increase compared to the beginning of the term.
The number of travel companies licensed to operate in Thanh Hoa has also increased. There are now 82 travel businesses in the province, including 22 international tour operators, 56 domestic tour operators, 3 tourism branches, and 1 tourism agency. This reflects a growth of 62 additional companies since the start of the term.
The provincial authorities have paid significant attention to the planning and development of tourist areas and sites. Currently, 47 tourism development plans have been approved, and 9 more are under research and development.
Intensive promotion and investment attraction efforts have resulted in 82 tourism business investment projects in the province, with a total registered capital of more than VND 146,000 billion. The rapid development of accommodation and tourism services infrastructure has led to the establishment of 1,300 hotels and guest houses, 192 homestays, 235 hotel apartments, 800 villas and rental apartments, offering a total of 56,700 rooms.
Thanh Hoa is also home to approximately 1,000 restaurants and 10 large-scale shopping centers catering to tourists. There are 30 companies providing transportation services with more than 180 cars ranging from 16 to 45 seats. Additionally, tourist areas and sites offer various means of transportation, including 900 electric cars, 500 pedicabs, 3 ships, and 15 tourist boats.
Investments in tourism products in Thanh Hoa have been focused on upgrading and developing them towards professionalism, gradually forming premium tourism products. Notably, there have been significant positive changes in beach tourism with large-scale infrastructure investments in key tourist areas such as Sam Son, Hai Tien (Hoang Hoa), and Hai Hoa (Nghi Son Town).
Cultural, historical, and spiritual tourism sites have also gained prominence, attracting a large number of visitors annually. These include the World Cultural Heritage site of Ho Citadel (Vinh Loc District), the Lam Kinh Special National Relic Site (Thọ Xuân District), the Am Tien Historical Relic (Trieu Son District), the Ham Rong Historical and Cultural Relic Site (Thanh Hoa City), and the Cua Dat Historical Relic Site (Thường Xuân District), to name a few.
Eco-tourism and community-based tourism products have also been receiving investments for improvement, such as the Pu Luong eco-tourism area (Ba Thuoc District), Ban Ma (Thường Xuân District), and Nang Cat (Lang Chanh District). These destinations have increasingly attracted domestic and international tourists.
