On August 20, 2024, in Hang Kia commune, Mai Chau district, Hoa Binh province, several organizations, including Vietnam Airlines, MoMo, the Center for People and Nature (PanNature), and the Hang Kia – Pa Co Nature Reserve, along with local authorities, collaborated to organize an event titled “Contributing to a Green and Sustainable Vietnam” to restore the forest in the Hang Kia – Pa Co Nature Reserve.
The event attracted the participation of nearly 150 delegates, including representatives from local authorities, youth union, women’s union, local people from Hang Kia and Pa Co communes, businesses in the area, and nature-loving volunteers from Hanoi and many other provinces.
In this first phase, the program planted 16,000 native trees across an area of 24 hectares in the Hang Kia – Pa Co Nature Reserve, aiming to increase the forest cover and restore the habitat for the local flora and fauna. During the same period, the community in Van Ho commune (Van Ho district, Son La province) also continued to green 3 hectares in the corridor area connecting to the Hang Kia – Pa Co Nature Reserve. The total restored area across both locations is 27 hectares with 18,000 native trees.
This is the first step in implementing the initiative, “Contributing to a Green and Sustainable Vietnam,” co-launched by Vietnam Airlines and MoMo, with a commitment to planting a total of 30,000 trees to restore 50 hectares of forest along the corridor connecting Mai Chau (Hoa Binh) and Van Ho (Son La) in 2024.
Officially launched on World Environment Day (June 5, 2024), the “Contributing to a Green and Sustainable Vietnam” initiative has, after nearly three months of implementation, raised sufficient funds to achieve the goal of restoring the first 25 hectares of forest on August 20, 2024. The remaining areas will be addressed in the next phase in the Hang Kia – Pa Co and Van Ho regions.
“Hang Kia – Pa Co is a small nature reserve with an area of 5,258 hectares, located in Mai Chau district, Hoa Binh province, at an altitude of 500 – 1,500 meters above sea level. Hang Kia and Pa Co are the names of two communes wholly within the reserve’s boundaries, with the Mong people as the majority.”
Mr. Nguyen Thanh Luong, Head of the Management Board of Hang Kia – Pa Co Nature Reserve.
The communes of Hang Kia and Pa Co are surrounded by forests and limestone mountains, enjoying a cool climate all year round. The local community preserves traditional cultural practices, including handmade weaving, embroidery, and bee wax drawing. Hang Kia – Pa Co is a must-visit destination for those seeking to explore the pristine beauty of Northwest Vietnam and experience the simple and hospitable lifestyle of the local people. Previously, Hang Kia – Pa Co was a highlight along the Northwest route, known for its old-growth forest with much of its primitive nature remaining along National Highway 6.
According to Mr. Nguyen Thanh Luong, Head of the Management Board of Hang Kia – Pa Co Nature Reserve, the reserve was established in 2000 with the goal of conserving the limestone mountain forest ecosystem, coniferous plants, and rare animal species in the region. However, over the years, due to agricultural production activities, most of the forest in the reserve is now limited to the mountain peaks, while the valleys and relatively low-altitude slopes have been converted into farmland.
“Restoring the forest ecosystem is a significant challenge for the reserve. The Management Board, local authorities, and the community are committed to rehabilitating the forest ecosystem, conserving biodiversity, and promoting ecological and experiential tourism in the area,” emphasized Mr. Luong.
As shared by Mr. Dang Anh Tuan, Deputy General Director of Vietnam Airlines, as the National Airline, Vietnam Airlines is dedicated to promoting sustainable development, nature conservation, environmental protection, and CO2 emission reduction.
“Contributing to a Green and Sustainable Vietnam” is an initiative with profound social significance. We are proud to join hands in restoring 50 hectares of forest in Hoa Binh and Son La in 2024,” affirmed Mr. Tuan.
According to Mr. Tuan, by simply purchasing Vietnam Airlines tickets directly on the MoMo platform or using MoMo as a payment method, customers can conveniently contribute to this noble cause. Forest restoration not only improves the livelihoods of local communities but also protects water sources, enhances air quality, increases carbon absorption, and supports the planet in achieving the Net Zero target by 2050.
Mr. Nguyen Hoanh Tien, Senior Deputy General Director – in charge of Marketing and Distribution Solutions at MoMo, shared that MoMo is not just a payment platform and financial service provider but also Vietnam’s most trusted online volunteering platform. MoMo is honored to bridge the gap through technology, turning online ticket booking and payment into a novel charitable experience for its users.
