Recently, orchards in Cai Be district, Tien Giang province sold Mon Thong durian for over 110,000 VND/kg, and Ri6 durian for 80,000 – 90,000 VND/kg. With these prices, the orchard owners still profit 40,000 – 50,000 VND/kg, making durian the most profitable fruit tree among the specialty plants in Tien Giang province.
Gardeners in My Loi A commune, Cai Be district, are excited about the durian harvest
According to the Tien Giang Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the total area for durian cultivation in the province is currently 21,790 hectares, of which the area that is in the fruiting stage is nearly 15,000 hectares, with a yield of 26 tons/ha and an output of 386,724 tons/year. Currently, the province has 155 regional codes for durian gardens with an area of over 6,900 hectares.
It is worth noting that in Cai Be district, thanks to the staggered production, the gardeners can harvest all year round, the trees are less susceptible to diseases, and there is no shortage of fresh water, resulting in a profit of nearly 3 billion VND/ha/year.
Durian trees in Tien Giang province yield the highest economic value among the local specialty plants
Mr. Nguyen Tan Dat, Chairman of My Loi A Commune People’s Committee, Cai Be district – a locality with nearly 1,200 hectares of durian trees, shared: “The price of durian has recently decreased but is still stable, currently around 100,000 VND/kg, and the farmers profit more than 30%. However, the farmers continue to plant because their predecessors did, and I do not recommend planting more for fear of oversupply and a possible price drop in the future.”
