The Quy Nhon – Chi Thanh expressway is one of the 12 component projects of the East Phase II North-South expressway (2021-2025). The road has a total investment of nearly 14,800 billion VND and started construction on January 1, 2023. It is expected to be completed by the end of 2025.

The Quy Nhon – Chi Thanh expressway is invested by Project Management Board 85. The road has a length of 61.7 km (excluding the section coinciding with the Cu Mong tunnel). Of which, the section passing through Binh Dinh is about 19.6 km long and the section passing through Phu Yen is about 42.1 km long.

A special point is that most of the Quy Nhon – Chi Thanh expressway runs along the mountains and hills. Specifically, to the South, after passing the Cu Mong tunnel, the road passes through Song Cau town, follows the Con Quan mountain slope, the west slope of Con Lon mountain, and continues to run south to Tuy An district.

The Quy Nhon – Chi Thanh expressway is divided into 3 construction packages, of which the section through Phu Yen province includes 2 packages: 12-XL and 13-XL. Construction package 12-XL (from km24+900 – km47+00 through Song Cau town). Construction package 13-XL (km47+00 – km66+965,9) spans Song Cau town and Tuy An district.

Currently, the Quy Nhon – Chi Thanh expressway has over 60 construction sites, over 820 equipment items, and nearly 1,700 engineers and workers working directly on the construction site. As of early March 2024, Phu Yen province has handed over 96.13% of the land to the investor.

After more than a year of construction, the project has achieved 22-23% progress, meeting requirements and surpassing the set plan. The Ministry of Transport aims to complete in the third quarter of 2025, that is, 3 months ahead of schedule.

At Ky Lo Bridge (An Dan commune, Chi Thanh town), the construction work is busy. Hundreds of workers are working with modern machinery and equipment involved in the construction site.

Ky Lo Bridge is one of the major bridges of the entire North-South expressway project with a length of 1.8 km, belonging to construction package 13-XL led by Construction Group 168 Vietnam. The bridge has 38 piers and abutments with a total investment of over 1,800 billion VND.

At the Chí Thạnh interchange in Chi Thanh town, Tuy An district, Phu Yen province, the construction work for both the Quy Nhon – Chi Thanh and Chi Thanh – Van Phong expressways is bustling with the sound of machinery and vehicles coming in and out.

The main obstacle of the Quy Nhon – Chi Thanh expressway project is electricity. Many positions have power line obstacles, so the construction units have not been able to proceed. In the second quarter of 2024, Phu Yen province will complete the clearance to hand over 100% of the main route land to the investor.

In addition, there are obstacles about unstable ground and 55 households in Song Cau town have not agreed to hand over the land. Phu Yen province’s goal is to hand over all lands for construction projects to the investor by March 15, 2024.

The Quy Nhon – Chi Thanh expressway, when completed, will connect with other component projects of the North-South expressway to create a convenient transportation route throughout the country. It is expected that the East North-South expressway will shorten the travel time from Phu Yen to Ho Chi Minh City from the current 8 hours to 5 hours, and from Phu Yen to Hanoi from 20 hours to 14 hours.
