Bank stocks plummet on March 18th

A number of large-cap stocks experienced significant declines during today's session (18/3).

On March 18, the Vietnamese stock market opened with a slight green color, but then suddenly reversed and plunged deeply. Selling pressure increased strongly across the market, causing the VNIndex to drop 36 points at one point.

In the afternoon session, VIC and VRE reversed the strong increase, helping VNIndex narrow its decline. At the end of the session, VNIndex stood at 1,243.56 points, down 20.22 points (-1.6%), HNX-Index decreased by 1.19% to 236.68 points; UPCoM-Index decreased by 1.13% to 90.32 points.

Banking stocks sank in the red with 22 out of 27 stocks declining. Among them, many large-cap stocks saw sharp declines.

CTG of VietinBank was the biggest loser today, closing at VND 33,300 per share (-4.17%). This stock had a moment in the session when it dropped to VND 32,350 per share. CTG also saw net selling by foreign investors of over 500,000 shares in this session.

Many other stocks also dropped by over 3% such as MSB (-3.4%), TCB (-3.14%), HDB (-3.04%), LPB (-3.02%). Other large-cap stocks also declined such as MBB (-2.52%), VPB (-2.41%), VCB (-1.06%), BID (-0.38%).

Only 2 stocks stood at the reference price, VAB and ABB. Three stocks closed in the green which are SGB of Saigonbank (+3.6%), EIB of Eximbank (+3.08%), OCB (+0.68%).

EIB stock has witnessed a surge in liquidity in the past 2 sessions, reaching over VND 550 billion per session. This stock has also been strongly accumulated by foreign investors with a net buy volume of over 4.4 million shares, worth VND 105 billion.

In addition to EIB, STB of Sacombank was also net bought by foreign investors in today’s session (over 2 million shares, worth VND 67 billion).

Meanwhile, VPB of VPBank was heavily sold, with net selling volume from foreign investors of over 7 million shares, worth VND 150 billion. Some other stocks were also net sold such as CTG, HDB, OCB.

The overall liquidity of the banking sector increased sharply with a trading value of over VND 5,700 billion in today’s session. Among them, STB of Sacombank still has the highest liquidity, nearly VND 790 billion.
