“Phú Mỹ Fertilizer Plant: 2 Decades of Bountiful Harvests”

The decision to build the Phu My Fertilizer Plant was a bold move by Petrovietnam, and it has proven to be an incredibly wise one. For over two decades, the plant has been a stable and efficient producer of fertilizer, playing a crucial role in the growth of Petrovietnam and Vietnamese agriculture.

For Agricultural Security

With the view that gas cannot be burned – a valuable resource with an expected loss of about $40-45 million per year at 1998 prices, and the determination to be self-sufficient in fertilizers, in 2000, the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (now Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group – Petrovietnam) was entrusted by the Government to be the investor in building Phu My Fertilizer Plant in Phu My I Industrial Park, Ba Ria – Vung Tau Province. This is also the first plant in Vietnam in the downstream sector of the oil and gas industry and is implemented under the EPCC contract with a total investment of $445 million, a capacity of 740,000 tons of urea per year, meeting about 50% of the domestic demand for nitrogen fertilizer at that time.

On April 21, 2004, the Board of Directors of Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group issued Decision No. 887/QD-HQT officially establishing Phu My Fertilizer Plant to prepare personnel for the receipt and operation of the plant from Technip – Samsung Contractor. Since then, with a pioneering, creative, and progressive spirit, the plant’s engineers and technicians have quickly grasped and mastered the world’s leading technology. They have undertaken and fulfilled the mission of producing nitrogen fertilizer from natural gas, supplying the domestic market to reduce nitrogen fertilizer imports, contributing to market stabilization, ensuring food security, and agricultural security for the country.

The tradition of pioneering and creativity of the plant’s engineers and experts has been maintained and promoted strongly over the past 20 years. From an initial plant, up to now, with determination and continuous efforts, the collective of officials, employees, and laborers of PVFCCo/Phu My Fertilizer Plant has started to implement the construction and put into operation many new works, significantly increasing output and types of fertilizer products. Typically, it is a complex of projects to invest in works to increase the capacity of the NH3 workshop and the NPK fertilizer production plant with a chemical capacity of 250,000 tons/year…

Also thanks to that precious tradition, from the only initial product of Urea, the team of experts and engineers has explored, researched, and successfully developed the Phu My Fertilizer product line including: Urea, NPK, Kali, DAP, SA… Recently, PVFCCo has regularly researched and introduced new products, pioneering the market such as Phu My + Ke Bo fertilizer, NPK Phu My + microorganisms, a product line dedicated to urban agriculture – Phu My Garden… Phu My Fertilizer products have met the needs of advanced agricultural production of farmers across the country, while contributing to forming a new trend in the country’s agriculture – safe, high-tech, modern, and economically efficient agriculture, helping to push back fake and poor-quality fertilizers in the market and protect the environment.

Over the past 20 years, Phu My Fertilizer (PVFCCo, HOSE: DPM) has persistently fulfilled its mission, contributing to making Vietnam one of the powerhouses in agricultural exports. Even in extremely difficult business production moments like after the Covid-19 pandemic, PVFCCo/Phu My Fertilizer Plant still strives to ensure a sufficient and timely fertilizer supply for farmers nationwide, maintaining the domestic market, and contributing to the success of the country’s agriculture.

Continuous improvement and renewal

Counting from its official inauguration in 2004 up to now, Phu My Fertilizer Plant has gone through 2 decades of operation, almost equal to the age of the project. That also means that the risks of sudden malfunctions and safety issues are very high. However, thanks to the hands and brains of the management, operation, and maintenance staff, the plant has ensured safe, stable, continuous, and efficient production over the past two decades.

According to statistics up to now, there have been a total of nearly 2,000 initiatives for rationalization successfully applied at the plant with a value of more than VND 400 billion. Thanks to these technical initiatives and improvements, an “aged” plant like Phu My Fertilizer Plant can operate beyond its design capacity, currently at 115% capacity. Moreover, it also helps the plant achieve stability and continuity, setting production operation records.

And according to the calculations of experts, with the current operation and preventive maintenance methods, the plant’s machinery will always be in the best condition and operate most efficiently; thereby being able to help the plant continue to maintain stability and may extend the project life by several more decades!

Especially, in the context of increasing production costs affecting product prices, the application of science and technology in production is extremely important to ensure the stable development of the Plant/PVFCCo. This has been implemented by the Plant over the past 10 years and has achieved proud achievements.

Mr. Nguyen Van Nhung – Deputy Director in charge of production of Phu My Fertilizer Plant said that the Plant has replaced some important equipment to reduce energy consumption such as primary Kali Fulmin catalyst equipment, HTR, and a new synthesis tower. At the same time, with the Urea workshop, the Plant also has a synthesis tower and replaces the disc lid with a conical lid. Thanks to this, the Plant has improved production efficiency, reduced energy consumption, and increased competitiveness…

General maintenance of Phu My Fertilizer Plant in 2023

The digital transformation at the Plant is also strongly promoted with the goal of building a “smart factory”. In recent years, Phu My Fertilizer Plant has applied many digital initiatives and built/upgraded software such as PMIS, System 1 – Evo, akaBot… And in the future roadmap, PVFCCo will build more software suitable to the world trend and maintain stable and effective operation for Phu My Fertilizer.

As can be seen, from a bold decision, overcoming all initial difficulties and doubts about feasibility and effectiveness, up to now, Petrovietnam has affirmed the strong determination to build a fertilizer production plant from natural gas is completely correct. Phu My Fertilizer Plant deserves to be the “elder brother” of the petrochemical industry, making an important contribution to the development of Petrovietnam and being the driving force of Vietnamese agriculture for 20 years.

With accumulated resources, along with the unanimity and the spirit of trying its best of the collective of officials, employees, and laborers, it is believed that the achievements of the Phu My Fertilizer Plant will continue to be promoted as well as always accompany farmers to bring about bumper harvests.
