High Demand for Vietnamese Characters at the Start of the Lunar New Year

During the Lunar New Year, many temples in Thanh Hoa have crowded stalls selling calligraphy. It is delightful to see that most modern calligraphers, although still wearing traditional attire and using Chinese ink, red paper, and brushes, now write calligraphy in Vietnamese characters. And they are quite popular among customers.

Calligrapher Le Dinh Son works continuously without raising his head.

The guests have a large number of children and many of them ask for the word “Peace”.

At Tang Phuc Pagoda in Dong Cuong Ward, Thanh Hoa City, the Vietnamese calligraphy table of calligrapher Le Dinh Son has become famous. His table is surrounded by people and I stood observing him for 15 minutes and saw him working continuously without raising his head. He has a young girl to assist him in preparing the paper and hanging it up. There are available templates and customers can choose according to their preferences.

Le Dinh Son not only writes but also advises customers on choosing words that are precise, concise, and meaningful.

Busy, so he has a young and beautiful assistant to help prepare the paper and hang it up.

And she also works fast.

When asked about calligraphy, he said the most commonly requested words during the New Year holiday are “Peace”, “Serene”, “Prosperity”, “Fortune”…

Surprisingly, many customers have their children with them. And most of the requested words are “Peace”, “Serene” (I wonder if both children and parents feel uneasy about the pressure and risks in today’s life).

This couple bought the word “Fortune” and dried it in the sunlight.

This little girl chose the word “Serene”. Her mother said it was her idea.

And the whole family is happy with the chosen words.

Le Dinh Son used to be an architect. He often sits and writes calligraphy at Cua Dat and during the Lunar New Year, he goes to some temples.

Lunch is approaching but calligrapher Lê Đình Sơn’s word-selling table is still crowded with customers.
