Starting from February 1, 2024, the town of Viet Yen was established based on Viet Yen district, with an area of 171 square kilometers and a population of nearly 230,000 people. It is also the only town in Bac Giang province up to the present time.

Viet Yen town is as large as 9 central districts of Hanoi (Ba Dinh, Hoan Kiem, Tay Ho, Cau Giay, Long Bien, Dong Da, Hai Ba Trung, Thanh Xuan, Nam Tu Liem). After establishment, the town has 9 wards and 8 communes.

According to the approved General Urban Planning Mission of Viet Yen city by Bac Giang province until 2045, with the ratio of 1/10,000 approved by the Prime Minister, by 2030, Viet Yen will meet the criteria of a type III urban area and become a city under the administration of Bac Giang province with the urbanization rate of about 60 – 75% and reaching about 75 – 85% by 2045.

The province’s industrial capital

As the only town in Bac Giang at present, Viet Yen is located at the southwest gateway of Bac Giang province, in the direct influence of the key economic region of Hanoi – Hai Phong – Quang Ninh, connected to the economic development corridor on the Hanoi – Bac Giang expressway, creating favorable conditions for exchange, economic and socio-cultural development, and commerce.

The town has key routes passing through, such as the Hanoi – Bac Giang – Lang Son expressway, national highways 17 and 37, and the North-South railway line. These routes pass through three provinces and cities: Hanoi, Bac Ninh, and Bac Giang, and are the most important arteries for the development of industry, tourism, and urban areas in Bac Ninh and Bac Giang.

Currently, Viet Yen has formed economic corridors with many large-scale industrial parks, turning Viet Yen district into the most dynamic development area in Bac Giang province. These include the North-South corridor (along National Highway 1A, from Quang Chau Industrial Park to Song Khe – Noi Hoang Industrial Park, where many large-scale industrial parks have been established and are being formed) and the East-West corridor (along National Highway 37 connecting from Dinh Tram Industrial Park to Hiep Hoa; this is the most potential corridor, especially after the completion of the upgrading of National Highway 37).

According to the Bac Giang province’s urban planning for the period 2021 – 2030, vision to 2050, out of the 6 industrial parks established in the province, Viet Yen town has 4 industrial parks, including Quang Chau Industrial Park with an area of 516 hectares, Van Trung Industrial Park with an area of 388 hectares, Dinh Tram Industrial Park with an area of 127 hectares, and Viet Han Industrial Park with an area of 198 hectares, with an average occupancy rate of over 80%, accounting for about 70% of the total area of planned industrial parks in the province.

Notably, these industrial parks are the focal points of many technology and manufacturing giants such as Foxconn, Luxshare-ICT, JA Solar, Siflex, Samkwang, Crystal Martin, and Lens… Last year, Foxconn – Apple’s assembly partner also signed an MoU with a subsidiary of Kinh Bac to lease about 50 hectares in Quang Chau Industrial Park.

Many Asian businesses’ factories are also located in Viet Yen, such as Fu Hong Company, Hong Hai Science and Technology Group, Nichirin Company, Yokou Mould (Japan), Hosiden Vina Company (South Korea), Nienyi Company (Taiwan – China), Hana Micron Vina – a semiconductor giant in South Korea…

By 2030, Bac Giang province plans to establish 20 new industrial parks with a total area of 3,789 hectares, of which 6 industrial parks will be located in Viet Yen town with a total area of 1,009 hectares (accounting for nearly 1/3 of the total area of new industrial parks in the province).

In terms of industrial cluster development, Viet Yen town has Van Ha Industrial Cluster, Viet Tien Industrial Cluster, Hoang Mai Industrial Cluster, with an occupancy rate of over 50%. There are also new industrial clusters such as Quang Chau, Tien Son, Nghia Trung, Nenh…

At the end of 2023, the socio-economic situation of Viet Yen district continued to lead Bac Giang province, with a growth rate of 19.9% in production value in 2023. The district’s total production value grew by 19.94%, leading 10 districts and cities. The district’s total GRDP accounted for over 68% of the total province’s, and the industrial sector alone accounted for over 78% of the total province’s. The average growth rate for the period 2020-2023 reached 25.56%, surpassing the target of the Congress)….
