According to analyst Jeff Pu, the iPhone 17 will feature a 24MP selfie camera across all models. This is likely to be a fresh upgrade compared to the current iPhone 15 lineup, which sports a 12MP selfie camera. Apple is expected to implement this change by 2025.
Specifically, according to MacRumors, Jeff Pu stated that all four iPhone 17 models will have a 24MP selfie camera with six plastic lenses. While there are no details about the sensor size or pixel size yet, this could be a notable enhancement. A higher-resolution selfie camera allows for more detailed cropping.

Additionally, the 24MP selfie camera can potentially enhance low-light photography through pixel-binning technology. A 24MP photo, when pixel-binned, becomes equivalent to an 8MP image, improving detail and quality in low-light environments.
While 24MP isn’t the highest resolution on the market, as many Android phones have upgraded their selfie cameras to 32MP, 40MP, and even 50MP, it’s still a significant leap for Apple. Samsung previously offered a 40MP selfie camera on its Ultra models, but the Galaxy S24 Ultra has reverted to a 12MP lens. This change raises questions about the ideal resolution for mobile selfie cameras and whether higher resolutions truly benefit users, given the Gen Z trend of preferring less sharply focused images.
