Recently, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport sent a proposal to the Tien Giang Department of Transport to seek opinions on the report proposing a plan to operate a ferry route from Can Gio to Tien Giang.

According to the proposed plan, the intended location for the terminal in Can Gio is in Long Hoa commune, in the existing Dong Hoa Ferry area, on the Ha Thanh-Dong Hoa River near the Soai Rap River estuary.

The terminal on the Gò Công Đông side is in the town of Vam Lang, Gò Công Đông district. Currently, the locations of the Can Gio and Gò Công Đông terminals are being updated in the overall plan of Ho Chi Minh City and Tien Giang province.

This ferry route is 12 km long, with a ferry travel time of about 30 minutes. It is expected to have a minimum of 4 trips/day each way, operating from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily. The ferry type to be used will have a minimum load capacity of 100 tons, a minimum capacity of 100 passengers, 50 motorcycles, and 10 cars.

According to the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Transport, after the Can Gio-Vam Lang ferry route is operational, people from My Tho city and Gò Công town (Tien Giang) traveling to Can Gio will be able to shorten their distance and reduce travel time compared to the current Can Gio-Can Giuoc ferry route by road.

Currently, if traveling by road from My Tho City to Can Gio District, the distance is 120 km and it takes about 3 hours 40 minutes; from Gò Công town to Can Gio is a distance of 80 km with a travel time of 2 hours 30 minutes. With the Can Gio-Vam Lang ferry, the travel distance will be reduced by 40 km and the travel time will be shortened by about 40-50 minutes, including waiting time for the ferry.

In terms of implementation progress, it is expected that in the first quarter of 2024, the investor will be able to select a business to implement and complete the investment within 6 months. The ferry terminal will be completed and put into operation by the end of the third quarter of 2024. The operation time of this ferry route is 15 years.
