Ho Chi Minh City ready to expand rooftop solar power to 50% of households

Upon allocation of capacity and the introduction of incentives for rooftop solar deployment, the Department of Industry and Trade of Ho Chi Minh City will proceed with the implementation of solar power systems installation throughout the city.

On the afternoon of March 14, during the regular press conference on the socio-economic situation, Mr. Nguyen Phuong Duy – Deputy Head of the Energy Management Division of the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade discussed various goals for 2030. The goal is for Ho Chi Minh City to have 50% of households using rooftop solar power.

According to Mr. Duy, there are currently 14,210 rooftop solar power systems installed in the city with a total capacity of about 358.3 MWp.

In terms of the mechanism for developing rooftop solar power, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is developing a draft plan to implement Power Plan 8, which includes the allocation of rooftop solar power capacity in localities for the Prime Minister’s consideration and approval.

At the same time, the Ministry of Industry and Trade is also drafting a Government Decree on the mechanism to encourage the development of rooftop solar power, which includes provisions on the procedures and processes for installing rooftop solar power systems.

The Ho Chi Minh City Department of Industry and Trade also informed that they have provided guidance to the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City to issue a Letter to the Ministry of Industry and Trade to give feedback on the proposal to develop a Government Decree on the mechanism to encourage the development of rooftop solar power.

Additionally, the department has proposed that the Ministry of Industry and Trade study a specific policy mechanism for the development of rooftop solar power in the city.

After the Government issues the mechanism for developing rooftop solar power, the Department of Industry and Trade will use the allocated capacity in the implementation plan for Power Plan 8 and the Decree on the mechanism to encourage the development of rooftop solar power to provide guidance to the People’s Committee of Ho Chi Minh City to implement the installation of rooftop solar power systems in the city.
