Recently, on the streets of Hanoi, eggs are being sold everywhere at a plummeting price of only 65,000 VND for 30 eggs. This is equivalent to a price of just over 2,000 VND per egg. This significant price drop has attracted many buyers, resulting in a significant increase in egg consumption. However, it has also left many people curious as to why eggs have become so cheap…

According to Mr. Duy – a chicken egg seller on Cau Giay Street, the main reason for the sharp drop in egg prices is the surplus of eggs left over from the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday. Before Tet, confectionery factories purchased a large quantity of eggs for production, but after Tet, the demand suddenly decreased. Additionally, during the holiday season, people tend to prefer other dishes such as chicken, pork, and beef, resulting in less egg consumption. This has led to a large amount of leftover stock, causing a sharp decline in egg prices.

Ms. Ngoc – an egg vendor on Hoang Quoc Viet Street – said, “During the Tet holiday, even though people didn’t consume many eggs, the chickens continued to lay eggs as usual, resulting in an excess. Moreover, restaurants, supermarkets, and markets were closed for an extended holiday and not operating at full capacity. In addition, students and people in Hanoi returned to their hometowns to celebrate Tet, so there was no market to consume eggs during that period. As a result, during this time, us sellers have to take a loss in order to sell off the surplus eggs.”

Furthermore, the small traders also mentioned that at the farms, the prices of eggs are even lower, ranging from 1,500 to 1,800 VND per egg. This has caused the farm owners to transport eggs from remote districts and provinces such as Thanh Oai, Vinh Phuc, and Hai Duong to Hanoi in order to salvage the losses. Local eggs are being sold everywhere on the streets.

Although the price of eggs on the streets has fallen sharply, the prices of eggs in supermarkets remain high. Industrial chicken eggs are being sold for 39,900 VND for 10 eggs, while local chicken eggs can cost up to 47,000 VND for 10 eggs. In the market, local chicken eggs are relatively stable in price at around 25,000 VND for 10 eggs, and industrial chicken eggs range from 18,000 to 25,000 VND for 10 eggs (depending on the type).

Compared to the pre-Tet price, the price of eggs has dropped to 65,000 VND for 30 eggs, while before it was 85,000 – 90,000 VND. This significant price drop has attracted the attention of many consumers.

“Currently, with the cheap price of eggs, many students and people buy more because the cost is much cheaper than before. We sell about 2,000 eggs every day,” Ms. Ngoc added.

Supermarket prices for eggs are 2-2.5 times higher than those sold outside the market or on the street.

Cheap eggs have attracted a significant number of consumers. However, for chicken farmers, this is a difficult period as the price of chicken feed has not decreased while the price of eggs has plummeted.
