Empty Flights to Ho Chi Minh City During Tet

While flight bookings from Ho Chi Minh City to other destinations are at a high level, the booking rate for flights from other locations back to Ho Chi Minh City is very low, with many flights being empty.

Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority has just provided an update on ticket sales and reservations for the Year of the Wood Dragon Lunar New Year period from January 24th to February 18th, 2024.

In the pre-Tet period (from February 10th to 14th, 2024), flights from Ho Chi Minh City to destinations with high reservation rates are evenly spread throughout the days.

These include routes such as Ho Chi Minh City to Hai Phong (from 85% to 98%), Ho Chi Minh City to Hue (from 86% to 99%), Ho Chi Minh City to Pleiku (from 88% to 99%), Ho Chi Minh City to Thanh Hoa (from 85% to 96%), Ho Chi Minh City to Chu Lai (from 92% to 98%), Ho Chi Minh City to Quang Binh (from 89% to 103%), Ho Chi Minh City to Vinh (from 90% to 98%).

With additional capacity from airlines, some local routes have become less crowded compared to the previous week and still have available seats on certain days.

Specifically, the reservation rates for flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Buon Ma Thuot from February 11th to 13th, 2024 are at 76-83%. Flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Tuy Hoa on February 10th (70%), February 16th (85%), and February 17th (72%) still have available seats. Similarly, flights from Ho Chi Minh City to Quy Nhon on February 11th and 17th have reservation rates of 76-78%. On February 17th, the reservation rate for the Ho Chi Minh City-Vinh route is 67%.

Compared to the previous week, the reservation rates for the Ho Chi Minh City-Hanoi route during this period have started to increase and are evenly distributed throughout the days with rates ranging from 56% to 73%.

During this period, the reservation rates for flights from local destinations to Ho Chi Minh City are very low, averaging from 20% to 30%, with many empty flights. The same applies to the Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City route, with an average reservation rate of about 30%.

In the post-Tet period (from February 17th to 21st, 2024), many routes from local airports to Ho Chi Minh City have high reservation rates, and some routes have sold out on certain days.

Specifically: Buon Ma Thuot-Ho Chi Minh City (ranging from 75% to 100%), Ca Mau-Ho Chi Minh City (from 80% to 100%), Hai Phong-Ho Chi Minh City (from 87% to 99%), Hue-Ho Chi Minh City (from 82% to 99%), Pleiku-Ho Chi Minh City (from 88% to 100%), Tuy Hoa-Ho Chi Minh City (from 94% to 99%), Thanh Hoa-Ho Chi Minh City (from 83% to 100%), Quy Nhon-Ho Chi Minh City (from 95% to 100%), Chu Lai-Ho Chi Minh City (from 97% to 100%), Dong Hoi-Ho Chi Minh City (from 95% to 100%), Vinh-Ho Chi Minh City (from 80% to 100%).

In the post-Tet period, the Hanoi-Ho Chi Minh City route has a high booking rate. Except for February 17th with a booking rate of just over 56%, all other days have booking rates of over 80%, with rates of 94% on February 17th and 18th.

Leasing 15 aircraft for Tet flights

During this period, all 15 wet-leased aircraft from Vietnamese airlines have been put into operation. The Vietnam Civil Aviation Authority continues to direct and coordinate with airlines and airports to increase capacity supply, with an estimated 2-3 flights per day on some routes from Ho Chi Minh City to destinations with high demand.
