Hanoi Builds 4 Bridges Worth Over 26,000 Billion VND in One Year

In 2024, Hanoi is set to begin construction on four new bridges spanning the Red River: Thượng Cát, Vân Phúc, Hồng Hà, and Mễ Sở. These bridges will provide crucial connections across the river, easing traffic congestion and facilitating smoother transportation for both residents and visitors alike. With their innovative designs and state-of-the-art engineering, these bridges will not only enhance the city's infrastructure but also serve as iconic landmarks, showcasing Hanoi's commitment to progress and development. The project signifies Hanoi's unwavering determination to create a modern and livable city, one that thrives on connectivity, accessibility, and sustainable growth. As the construction commences in 2024, the city eagerly anticipates the completion of these bridges, which will undoubtedly transform the landscape and improve the lives of its residents.

According to the plan from now until 2030, Hanoi will have a total of 16 bridges across the Red River, creating favorable conditions for seamless connectivity between economic and political centers, as well as between local areas and satellite towns.

Notably, Hanoi is expected to start the construction of 4 bridges across the Red River in 2024, including Thượng Cát, Vân Phúc, Hồng Hà, and Mễ Sở. These 4 bridges are expected to be a new breakthrough for the development of the capital city.

Thượng Cát Bridge

The Thượng Cát Bridge is expected to cost nearly 8.3 trillion Vietnamese dong. With a design of 8 lanes, a length of 820 meters, and a width of 33 meters, the Thượng Cát Bridge will cross the Red River and contribute to the completion of the transportation infrastructure according to the plan.

The Thượng Cát Bridge will connect the Vành đai 3.5 road with the Bắc Từ Liêm district and the Đông Anh district. This project will be an important factor in the development of the Western part of the capital city, which needs to supplement its urban infrastructure.

Deputy Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, Dương Đức Tuấn emphasized at the ceremony to announce and award the architectural design proposal competition for the Thượng Cát Bridge on January 25 that the Thượng Cát Bridge construction project across the Red River on the Vành đai 3.5 road is included in the Transportation Development Plan of Hanoi until 2030, with a vision until 2050, which has been approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 519/QD-TTg on March 31, 2016.

Deputy Chairman of the Hanoi People’s Committee, Dương Đức Tuấn also said that according to the plan, the Thượng Cát Bridge construction project and the roads on both ends of the bridge will start on October 10, 2024 (the 70th anniversary of the Liberation Day of the Capital).

Vân Phúc Bridge

The Vân Phúc Bridge construction project will be implemented from the first quarter of 2024 to the fourth quarter of 2027, with a total budget of 3,444 billion Vietnamese dong. The estimated cost for land clearance is 112 billion dong, construction cost is 2,507 billion dong, contingency cost is 449 billion dong, and project management cost is 376 billion dong.

The Vân Phúc Bridge will be built across the Red River, connecting with the National Highway 32 through a 7.7 km road. The starting point of the bridge is at the intersection of National Highway 32 in Phụng Thượng commune, Phúc Thọ district, and the ending point is at the border between Hanoi and Vĩnh Phúc province.

The construction of the Vân Phúc Bridge will complete the transportation network according to the master plan, meeting the transportation needs of goods and people, and promoting the socio-economic development not only for Hanoi and Vĩnh Phúc province but also for the neighboring provinces in the northern key economic region.

Mễ Sở Bridge

In late May 2020, the Prime Minister agreed with the proposal of the Hanoi People’s Committee to build the Mễ Sở Bridge across the Red River. This project is designed with a length of about 13.8 km, a width of 17 meters, and an estimated total cost of 4,881 billion Vietnamese dong.

Once completed, the Mễ Sở Bridge will create a new route from the center of Hanoi to Văn Giang district, Hưng Yên province, replacing the current route through the Thanh Trì Bridge and the Mễ Sở Ferry.

The construction of this bridge will also facilitate the connection between the Hanoi – Hai Phong Expressway and the Pháp Vân – Cầu Giẽ Expressway, thereby reducing the traffic pressure in the city and minimizing congestion.

The Mễ Sở Bridge is expected to be built about 600 meters from the Hồng Vân Pump Station in Thường Tín district, in the downstream direction of the Red River. On the other side, in Văn Giang district, the entrance to the bridge will go through the areas of Thắng Lợi and Mễ Sở communes, near the 500kV power line.

The total length of the bridge and the connecting roads is about 14km, starting from the intersection of National Highway 1A and Ring Road 4 and ending at the intersection of Ring Road 4 and the Hanoi – Hai Phong Expressway.

Hồng Hà Bridge

The Hồng Hà Bridge is planned to intersect with Hồng Hà Street, between Gia Lễ Pagoda and Liên Hồng Middle School, located between Liên Hồng commune (Đan Phượng district) and Văn Khê commune (Mê Linh district).

The Hồng Hà Bridge will be 6 km long and is estimated to cost about 9,800 billion dong. Initially, the bridge was planned to be constructed in the period of 2016 – 2020.

Once formed, this bridge will be an important part in connecting traffic from Đan Phượng to Mê Linh, reducing the traffic load on the current Thăng Long Bridge and the future Thượng Cát Bridge. The Hồng Hà Bridge is one of the important links in the Hanoi Ring Road 4.
