Shark Signals 11/03: Foreign and proprietary traders disagree on retail stocks

During the session on 11/03, both domestic securities firms and foreign investors made net purchases, amounting to VND 304 billion and VND 49 billion, respectively. While there was mixed sentiment towards stocks such as FRT, FTS, VHM, MWG, and PVS, there was unanimous agreement on HPG.

Specifically, proprietary trading was the strongest net buyer with VPI at 54 billion VND in the top 10 stocks, followed by STB at over 38 billion VND. Banks were of particular interest to proprietary traders in the session on March 11, including STB, VCB, TCB, and ACB, which were net buyers with a total of 80 billion VND.

In contrast, while FPT was a net buyer, other FPT-related stocks such as FRT and FTS were all net sellers, with FRT being the most heavily sold off at 15 billion VND. The securities group contributed three names, including VCI, HCM, and FTS.

Foreign investors were net buyers of nearly 49 billion VND on March 11. HOSE alone had a net buying volume of up to 228.7 billion VND, while HNX was a net seller of 152 billion VND.

Value of foreign trading transactions over the past 5 sessions

In contrast to proprietary traders, FPT stocks were highly regarded by foreign investors as they were net buyers of both FRT and FTS. The retail stock FRT was the most “expected” by foreign investors, with net buying of 97 billion VND, relatively dominating compared to EIB’s 66.4 billion VND. In the session on March 11, the top 10 net buying stocks by foreign investors had differentiation in many sectors, including 2 bank stocks EIB, HDB; real estate group including VHM, VIC and KDH.

Similarly, like proprietary traders, PVS was the most heavily sold off by foreign investors at over 98 billion VND, followed by MSN at 90 billion VND. Although both involved retail and the ICT sector, MWG and DGW were net sold off at 31.4 billion VND and 34 billion VND respectively. Similarly, although both are banks, VPB is among the top stocks that foreign investors net sold off the most.
