Accelerating the relocation of technical infrastructure in Metro Line 2 in Ho Chi Minh City

On the morning of February 17th, also known as the 8th day of the Lunar New Year, the Urban Railway Management Board of Ho Chi Minh City (MAUR - the investor) held a ceremony to kick off the construction of the Ben Thanh - Tham Luong Metro Line 2 project for the Year of the Horse 2024 at the central Ben Thanh station.

Mr. Bui Anh Huan, Deputy Head of the Urban Railway Management Board in Ho Chi Minh City, stated that the relocation of technical infrastructure works has completed the selection of contractors for the relocation packages, restoration of water supply, drainage, lighting, signage, and traffic signal systems in December 2023. Up to now, the relocation of technical infrastructure works on Metro Line 2 has met the conditions for simultaneous implementation.

Therefore, Mr. Bui Anh Huan requested the contractors to urgently mobilize workers and machinery for construction; ensure the basic progress of relocating technical infrastructure works in 2024 to be ready for handover to the main contractors for tunnel construction and stations in 2025.

In 2024, the Board will focus on three main issues, including completing the compensation for land clearance, relocating technical infrastructure (electricity, water supply, drainage), and selecting general consultants to review the design and prepare artistic documentation. In 2024, the Board has been allocated VND 350 billion by the People’s Committee, which is the funding that must be disbursed in 2024.

The construction project of Ho Chi Minh City Metro Line 2 (Ben Thanh – Tham Luong) has a total investment of over VND 47,890 billion, using ODA loans from the Asian Development Bank (ADB), the Reconstruction Loan Corporation (KfW), the European Investment Bank (EIB), and counterpart funds from the budget.

With a length of over 11 km (including a 9 km underground section and a nearly 2 km elevated section) with 10 stations (9 underground stations and 1 elevated station), the project passes through 6 districts: 1, 3, 10, 12, Tan Binh, Tan Phu, covering a total area of over 251,000 m2; total compensation and support costs reach over VND 3,753 billion. Up to now, the rate of land handover has reached 86.69% (508/586 cases).
