Vietnamese Businesses Sell Massive Amounts of Goods in 7-day Tết Holiday: What Earns Nearly a Billion USD?

According to preliminary statistics from the General Statistics Office, during the Lunar New Year of the Year of the Rat in 2024 (7 days from February 8th to February 14th, 2024), there were over 1,000 Vietnamese businesses participating in import-export activities, with nearly 10 thousand import-export declarations registered at 116 Customs Sub-Departments and equivalent to 32 Provincial Customs Departments.

During this period, the total value of import-export goods nationwide reached 1.41 billion USD, of which the value of exported goods reached 730 million USD; and the value of imported goods reached 680 million USD. Therefore, during this Lunar New Year, Vietnamese businesses exported more than they imported.

The main export items are various types of mobile phones and components which are the group of items with the largest export value at 282.8 million USD, accounting for 38.7% of the total export value during the Lunar New Year. The group of items including computers, electronic products, and components reached a value of 263.6 million USD, accounting for 36.1%; followed by the group of machinery and equipment with a value of 54.4 million USD, accounting for 7.5%… The total export value of these top 3 groups of items accounted for 82.3% of the total export value.

Meanwhile, the main imported items are computers, electronic products, and components which are the largest imported items with a value of 428.7 million USD, accounting for 63% of the total import value. The group of items including machinery, equipment, tools and spare parts with a value of 41.3 million USD, accounting for 6%, the group of items including various types of petroleum with a value of 41.3 million USD, accounting for 6%… These top 3 groups of items accounted for 75% of the total import value during this Lunar New Year.

Vietnam’s goods have been exported to all 77 countries and territories. Among them, Vietnam’s goods were exported the most to the US market with a value of 220.7 million USD, accounting for over 30% of the total export value during the Lunar New Year. The next markets are China with 186.9 million USD (accounting for 25.6%), Korea with 71.2 million USD (accounting for 10%)…

Regarding imports, Vietnamese businesses imported goods originating from 59 countries and territories, of which the most imported goods originated from Korea with a value of nearly 239 million USD, accounting for 35.2% of the total import value during the Lunar New Year; followed by goods originating from China with 196.7 million USD (accounting for 29%), goods originating from Cambodia with 41.3 million USD (accounting for 6%), …

The Ministry of Industry and Trade said that the export turnover of goods in January 2024 of Vietnam is estimated to reach 33.57 billion USD, increasing by 6.7% compared to December 2023. Compared to the same period in 2023, the export turnover of goods in January 2024 increased by 42%; of which the domestic economic area increased by 62.6%, the area with foreign investment (including crude oil) increased by 35.6%. This is also the month with the highest export turnover since September 2022.

The total import-export turnover of goods in January 2024 is estimated at 64.22 billion USD, increasing by 37.7% compared to the same period last year, of which exports increased by 42%; imports increased by 33.3%.

Accumulated from the beginning of the year until February 14th, 2024, the total value of import-export goods nationwide reached 82.56 billion USD, increasing by 17.1% compared to the same period in 2023; of which the export value reached nearly 43.83 billion USD, increasing by 21.6% compared to the same period in 2023 and the import value reached 38.73 billion USD, increasing by 12.4%. Vietnam’s trade balance achieved a surplus of over 5.1 billion USD.
