Sharp Rise in Port Cargo Volume in the First Two Months of 2024

According to the Vietnam Maritime Administration (under the Ministry of Transport), the total volume of goods passing through the seaports in the first two months of 2024 is estimated at 111.614 million tons, an increase of 8% compared to the same period in 2023.

The types of goods also tend to increase, such as export goods (estimated at 28.684 million tonnes, up 8%), imported goods estimated at 33.884 million tonnes (up 16%), domestic goods estimated at 48.593 million tonnes (up 4%) and transshipment goods estimated at 454 thousand tonnes.

The volume of goods passing through the port in the first two months of 2024 increased compared to the same period, with January 2024 seeing a high increase of 43%.

Container goods increased 27% compared to the same period in 2023

For container goods, the volume of goods passing through the port measured in Teus in the first two months of 2024 reached an estimated 4.054 million Teus, an increase of 27% compared to the same period. Of which, export goods reached 1.323 million Teus (up 20%), imported goods reached 1.252 million Teus (up 19%), and domestic goods reached 1.478 million Teus (up 40%).

In January 2024, the volume of goods passing through the port also witnessed an increase. Specifically, the volume of goods in the first month of 2024 reached 68.716 million tonnes (excluding transshipment goods not unloaded at the port), an increase of 43% compared to the same period in 2023. The volume of goods measured in Teus reached 2.4 million Teus, an increase of 52%.

All types of goods showed an upward trend. Export goods reached 17.383 million tonnes, an increase of 29%. Imported goods reached 20.931 million tonnes, an increase of 49%. Domestic goods reached 30.127 million tonnes, an increase of 47%, and transshipment goods reached 275 thousand tonnes.

The volume of goods passing through the port by sea vessel (excluding transshipment goods not loaded) in January 2024 reached 47.404 million tonnes, an increase of 45% compared to the same period in 2023. The volume of goods passing through by inland waterway reached 21.312 million tonnes, an increase of 38%.

According to the explanation of the Maritime Administration, the growth rate of January is quite high compared to the same period because January 2023 is the Lunar New Year month, so the volume of goods is the lowest. Meanwhile, January 2024 is the month before the Lunar New Year – the time when the volume of goods is usually highest in the year in preparation for the festival.

Three port areas have the highest growth rate of up to 53%

The areas with the highest volume in the country such as Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau, Hai Phong all have growth rates from 43-53% compared to the same period, Quang Ninh increased by 34.2%, other areas saw increased volume such as Hue increased by 200%, Thanh Hoa increased by 64.8%, Dong Thap and Nghe An increased by 58%, Quang Ngai increased by 62%, Dong Nai increased by 32%. Nha Trang, Quang Ngai, Quang Nam, Can Tho all increased by more than 10%. Meanwhile, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh, An Giang recorded a small decrease.

Along with the increase in the volume of goods passing through, the volume of container goods passing through the port in January 2024 increased significantly by 51% compared to the same period in 2023.

Of which, the areas with the largest container volume passing through are Hai Phong, Ho Chi Minh City, Vung Tau all recorded an increase of 40-60% compared to the same period. The areas of Da Nang, Dong Nai, Nghe An, Dong Thap, Can Tho all increased from 49-144% and no area had a decrease in the volume of goods passing through.
