15 Years of Viettel’s ‘Go Global’ Journey in the Land of Pagodas

As of February 19, 2009, Metfone mobile network was officially launched in Cambodia with the commitment of Viettel leadership: Long-term investment, business, use and transfer of the most advanced technologies to contribute to economic and social benefits for your country. The vision of a cheap, highly efficient mobile network, with services covering the entire country, was set by the government and businesses with the expectation of promoting Cambodia’s telecommunications to regional and global levels.

After 15 years, Metfone has fulfilled its mission of bringing telecommunications, information technology to 96% of the population in the Land of Temples. Mobile communications, once a luxury service only for the affluent, has become a service for everyone, everywhere, at any time, and even affordable for each individual.

Metfone has helped 450,000 Cambodian students benefit from digital learning environments.

The strong investment and development of Metfone have contributed to raising Cambodia’s mobile phone density from 29% to 120%. The telecommunications infrastructure has been comprehensively built, modern and sustainable, with 100% of provinces, cities connected by optical fiber cables, helping Cambodia have good 4G coverage in the region.

That infrastructure is the foundation for mobile Internet, Big Data, cloud computing, and the Internet of Things, all of which are important platforms for the Industrial Revolution 4.0.

As the Viettel Group begins its “Creating New Realities” phase to become a technology company based on its infrastructure strengths, Metfone has also become the pioneer unit in digital transformation for the Cambodian government.

Currently, Metfone has partnered with most Ministries in digital transformation, including particularly important projects with the Ministry of Health and the Ministry of Education. Metfone’s educational ecosystem has reached over 300 schools nationwide, benefiting more than 450,000 students in digital learning environments.

After 15 years of business in Cambodia, Metfone has contributed over 1 billion dollars to the Royal Government’s budget.

In the digital financial sector, Metfone is a leading business. The E-money e-wallet is interconnected with all banks, providing convenience for people in financial and payment services, paying tuition fees, salary payments to officials and businesses, and transferring money to the poor in areas without banks.

Metfone is also the first Super App construction technology company in Cambodia. Super App CamID has over 6 million registrations, 1.5 million regular users, and integrates multiple services such as watching movies, listening to music, searching, entertainment, etc.

The 15-year journey has created a pride named Metfone, which is built by the people of Cambodia, on Cambodian soil, to serve the country and its people here,” said Mr. Tao Duc Thang, Chairman of the Viettel Group.

As an efficient business, Metfone contributes significantly to the Cambodian state budget. Up to 2023, Metfone has contributed over 1 billion USD to the Royal Government’s budget, placing it among the top 5 businesses contributing the largest budgets to the country.

General Tea Seyha, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defense of the Kingdom of Cambodia, assesses: Metfone has contributed to raising Cambodia’s position in the region and the world in the fields of telecommunications and information technology, playing an important role in the socio-economic development of Cambodia.

Metfone also actively participates in social charity, education, and sports activities, as well as the healthcare sector, with the aim of serving and improving the lives of Cambodian people. In this Southeast Asian country, Metfone has contributed over 120 million USD to social activities.

General Tea Seyha, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defense of the Kingdom of Cambodia, stated that Metfone has achieved its goals in building the telecommunications service, bringing national pride and contributing to raising Cambodia’s position in the region and the world in the fields of telecommunications and information technology, playing an important role in the socio-economic development of Cambodia, and has created jobs for more than 2,800 workers by 2023.

“I would like to express my deep gratitude for Metfone’s tireless support and cooperation with Ministries in charity activities, social work, education, and sports in Cambodia,” said Mr. Tea Seyha at the Metfone 15th anniversary ceremony on February 19, 2024.

In the next phase, Chairman Tao Duc Thang affirmed: “With the desire to continue contributing to the construction of Cambodia, Metfone will actively participate in implementing the Five-Point Strategy of the Royal Government, including: Developing human resources; Diversifying the economy and enhancing competitiveness; Developing private economic zones and employment; Developing comprehensive, sustainable, climate change-responsive development; Developing a digital economy and society.”
