Investment Promotion Conference “Vietnam – Investment Destination” in Japan.

On March 12, in Tokyo, Japan, Minister of Finance Ho Duc Phoc chaired the Investment Promotion Conference “Vietnam – Investment Destination”. This event is a continuation of the successful Investment Promotion Conference in South Korea and is part of the financial investment promotion program of the Ministry of Finance and the State Securities Commission.

The conference attracted more than 200 delegates from leading Japanese and Vietnamese companies, including financial institutions, banks, life insurance companies, investment funds, securities companies, and corporations.

Vietnam continues to be a shining bright spot for attracting investment

In his opening speech at the conference, Minister of Finance Ho Duc Phoc expressed his joy at the enthusiastic participation of the delegates, which demonstrated their dedication and responsibility in building and developing the increasingly strong and prosperous relationship between Vietnam and Japan. The conference will continue to open up even greater opportunities for cooperation and development between the two countries.

The Minister stated that after more than 50 years of official diplomatic relations, this year is the first year Vietnam and Japan have implemented the “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia and the World”, which has been upgraded since November 2023. Japan has become Vietnam’s leading economic partner, and Vietnam has also become an important partner of Japan in Southeast Asia.

The Minister expects that after this conference, companies from both countries will have more ideas and new collaborative projects to deepen economic cooperation and the comprehensive strategic partnership between Vietnam and Japan. The Japanese government and relevant agencies will continue to coordinate to strengthen the close relationship between the two nations, create a favorable investment environment, and support Japanese businesses investing in Vietnam.

At the conference, the Ministry of Finance introduced Japanese investors to the development of the Vietnam Stock Exchange (VSE) in recent years. In 2023, despite facing many challenges, the VSE has recovered well, the market structure has been increasingly improved, and important achievements have been achieved in many aspects. The VSE continues to be an attractive destination for domestic and foreign investors, playing an effective and important role in the economy.

Upgrading the Vietnam stock market from a frontier market to an emerging market is one of the major goals that the Vietnamese government is aiming for. This goal has been incorporated into the Plan for Restructuring the Stock Market and Insurance Market until 2020 and the orientation towards 2025, the Stock Market Development Strategy towards 2030. The Ministry of Finance and the SSC have implemented many activities to deepen and comprehensive cooperation with foreign partners, exchange information with relevant parties to attract foreign investment and resolve obstacles to investment in the Vietnam stock market.

Sharing the core tasks and solutions to create a foundation for the long-term development of the VSE, Minister Ho Duc Phoc affirmed that vigorous measures would be taken to develop the market, improve the legal framework, make a strong digital transformation in the securities sector, coordinate with relevant ministries and agencies to solve difficulties for businesses, focus on ensuring the safety and transparency of the securities market through inspections and examinations. At the same time, enhance international cooperation, implement indirect foreign investment attraction solutions, aiming to upgrade the Vietnam stock market from a frontier market to an emerging market.

At the conference, representatives from securities companies and large listed companies on the Vietnam Stock Exchange presented lectures on investment opportunities on the Vietnam Stock Exchange, green finance development potential, capital needs of listed companies for sustainable development, energy security, and sustainable development cooperation needs with foreign investors.

Regarding Japanese companies, a representative from Daiwa Securities Company in Vietnam, a company from Japan that has been associated with the Vietnam stock market for 16 years, shared their experience in investing in the Vietnam stock market. Representative of Daiwa assessed that the Vietnam stock market is welcomed by Japanese investors and affirmed that in the near future, Daiwa will expand its operations in Vietnam, creating opportunities for Japanese companies to invest in Vietnam.

At the conference, Japanese investors expressed their interest in investment opportunities on the Vietnam Stock Exchange and had many questions about the development policies of the stock market, upgrading the market, attracting new capital flows, etc. Chairman of the State Securities Commission Vu Thi Chan Phuong directly addressed the unresolved issues in the market upgrade work as well as policies to strengthen regulations on information disclosure, internal trading, and enhance the quality of listed companies on the Vietnam Stock Exchange.
