Vietnam Ranks Second and Fifth in Duck and Pig Production Worldwide

Vietnam has achieved remarkable heights in various livestock farming segments, positioning itself as a global leader. In the poultry sector, Vietnam boasts the second-largest flock of waterfowl, primarily ducks, with a population of 103 million. The country's swine population also ranks among the world's top five, with over 30 million head.

According to Mr. Duong Tat Thang, Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development), the above information was shared at a press conference introducing the 9th International Exhibition on Livestock, Milk Production, Meat Processing and Aquaculture (ILDEX VietNam 2024).

The exhibition will take place from May 29 to 31, at the Saigon Exhibition and Convention Center (Ho Chi Minh City).

According to Mr. Duong Tat Thang, the Vietnamese livestock industry, which used to be small-scale, fragmented, and self-sufficient, is now a large-scale production with a high position in the world.

For example, the waterfowl population (ducks, geese, but mostly ducks) ranks 2nd with 103 million heads; the pig population is over 30 million heads, ranking 5th; and the industrial feed production ranks 12th with 20.5 million tons (leading the ASEAN region).

Regarding the dairy industry, although it was developed later, its milk output has reached 11th in Asia with nearly 1.2 million tons in 2023, with a high productivity ranking 5th in Asia.

The total value of the livestock industry accounts for 26% of the agricultural GDP. In 2023, livestock product exports (honey, salted eggs, suckling pigs, bird’s nests, processed chicken meat, etc.) reached 515 million USD.

However, the livestock industry is facing many difficulties such as: dependence on imported input materials, high-density farming, environmental pollution issues, and complex disease developments.

“Faced with the challenges of global economic integration and the development requirements of the industry, we realize that organizing an international exhibition is very important. Through the exhibition, Vietnam can introduce and promote the image and development potential of the industry, promote trade, open up the market, and provide an opportunity for localities, businesses, and farmers to access new information, techniques, and technologies from around the world,” emphasized Mr. Thang.

According to the Director of the Department of Animal Husbandry, ILDEX VietNam 2024 will be the largest ever. More than 200 leading companies from around the world and more than 10,000 trade visitors are expected to attend the event.

A new feature this year is that the Department of Animal Husbandry, in coordination with the Organizing Committee, will have special support programs to promote Vietnamese products and brands: the National Pavilion – the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development’s pavilion, and the “Golden Product of Vietnamese Livestock” Award, which aims to honor and encourage individuals and organizations who have made significant contributions to the development of the Vietnamese livestock industry.
