The North-South highway project, section Dien Chau – Bai Vot, has been under construction since 2021. The project has a total length of more than 49 km, passing through Nghe An province (44.4 km) and Ha Tinh province (4.9 km). This is one of three component projects invested under the public-private partnership (PPP) model. The total investment capital for the phased stages of the project is over 11,157 billion VND. Of which, the investor mobilized 5,090 billion VND and the state capital is over 6,067 billion VND.

The highlight of this highway is the Than Vu tunnel with a length of over 1.13 km and many overpasses and bridges with impressive heights and lengths connected consecutively.

Specifically, the two ends of Than Vu tunnel are mountainous terrain. Due to the uneven terrain, there are 4 bridges designed to cross the hills. In the direction from North to South, there are 4 consecutive bridges including Xuan Duong 1 bridge, Xuan Duong 2 bridge, crossing Than Vu tunnel to Than Vu 2 bridge and O O bridge.

The Than Vu 2 bridge has a length of 1,287 meters and is located in Nghi Dong commune (Nghi Loc district, Nghe An). The bridge is designed with 32 Super T beams. Due to the high mountainous terrain, the bridge is designed with bridge piers with a height of tens of meters.

Each Super T beam has a length of 40 meters. After assembling the beams, the construction units proceed to pour concrete before laying the road surface to complete the project.

The construction units have to use modern machinery and large cranes to facilitate bridge construction.

O O bridge has a length of 879.4 meters with 22 Super T beams. The bridge is located in Nghi Dong commune (Nghi Loc district, Nghe An province).

The bridge piers are designed to be tens of meters high.

At the bridges, there are pillars ranging from 40-50 meters high, making it difficult for construction. However, during the construction process, the units have researched and innovated to effectively and safely implement the project.

As of now, the O O bridge deck has been completed.

The Than Vu 2 bridge is also essentially completed.

Some points are being further completed by the construction units.

In addition to the 4 consecutive bridges across the Than Vu tunnel, there are also large overpass bridges at Hung Duc bridge over the Lam river, connecting Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces.

In Ha Tinh province, more than 2.2 km of road leading to Hung Duc bridge has been built as a bridge instead of a road to cross the riverbank. Currently, these bridges are basically completed.

In early March 2024, workers are working urgently on the bridges to complete and put them into operation as soon as possible.

It is expected that by May 2024, the North-South highway section Dien Chau – Bai Vot will be opened to traffic to the national road 46 interchange (Hung Tay commune, Hung Nguyen district, Nghe An).
