The trial of Ms. Truong My Lan and her accomplices continued with the prosecution’s argument on the afternoon of March 19th.

According to the prosecution, all the defendants are educated individuals who have a legal understanding and are aware of which actions are illegal. The defendants’ actions have caused significant economic losses and have created a negative public opinion, therefore, strict punishment is necessary.

For the 5 defendants who are currently fugitives, law enforcement agencies have called for their surrender, but they have chosen to abandon their rights, therefore it is necessary to apply severe punishment to these defendants.

In court, the defendants from SCB have shown remorse and cooperated with the investigation to clarify the nature of the case and actively mitigate the consequences. The defendants are merely salaried employees, therefore the defense requests the court to consider reducing their sentence.

Therefore, the prosecution requests the following sentences: Truong My Lan (Chairman of the Board of Directors of Van Thinh Phat Group) – death penalty for the crime of “Embezzlement of property”; 19-20 years imprisonment for the crime of “Violation of regulations on banking activities, other activities related to banking activities”; 20 years imprisonment for the crime of “Bribery”. The total sentence being the death penalty.

Dinh Van Thanh (former Chairman of SCB – currently a fugitive) – 20 years imprisonment for the crime of “Violation of regulations on banking activities, other activities related to banking activities”; life imprisonment for the crime of “Bribery”. The total sentence being life imprisonment.

Vo Tan Hoang Van (former CEO of SCB) is facing 20 years imprisonment for the crime of “Violation of regulations on banking activities, other activities related to banking activities”; a life sentence for the crime of “Bribery”. The total sentence being life imprisonment.

Truong Hue Van (CEO of Windsor Real Estate Management Group) is facing a sentence of 19-20 years for the crime of “Embezzlement of property”.

Nguyen Cao Tri (Chairman of the Board of Directors of Van Lang Company, Chairman of the Board of Directors and CEO of Capella Group) is facing 10-11 years imprisonment for the crime of “Misappropriation of property”.

Chu Lap Co is facing a sentence of 11-12 years for the crime of “Violation of regulations on banking activities, other activities related to banking activities”.

Nguyen Thi Thu Suong (former Chairman of SCB) is facing 16-17 years imprisonment for “Violation of regulations on banking activities, other activities related to banking activities”.

The remaining defendants are facing sentences ranging from 3 years imprisonment (suspended sentence) to 4-5 years imprisonment for the crimes of “Violation of regulations on banking activities, other activities related to banking activities”, “Violation of regulations on lending activities of credit institutions”, “Gross negligence causing serious consequences”.

Do Thi Nhan (former Inspector General of the State Bank of Vietnam – NASB) is sentenced to life imprisonment for the crime of “Accepting bribes”.

Nguyen Van Hung (former Deputy Chief Inspector in charge of the Inspection and Monitoring Agency of the State Bank of Vietnam – NASB) is facing 14-15 years imprisonment for “Abusing positions, powers while performing official duties”.

Regarding the officials of the State Bank of Vietnam, the remaining 16 defendants are also facing sentences ranging from 3-year suspended imprisonment to 15-16 years imprisonment for the crimes of “Violation of regulations on banking activities, other activities related to banking activities”, “Violation of regulations on lending activities of credit institutions”, “Gross negligence causing serious consequences”.

The remaining defendants in the case are also facing sentences ranging from 3-year suspended imprisonment to 15-16 years imprisonment for the crimes of “Violation of regulations on banking activities, other activities related to banking activities”, “Violation of regulations on lending activities of credit institutions”, “Gross negligence causing serious consequences”.

In terms of civil liability, Truong My Lan is required to compensate SCB with 677 trillion VND and the accrued interest. As for Nguyen Cao Tri, the prosecution requests the court to continue to secure the assets of the defendant to ensure the execution of the sentence.
